Like A ChildPsalm 27:3

A Stranger Corrected Me In Front Of Everyone

This message is for the woman who was stopped and corrected out loud by somebody she had never met, in front of a line of people

She stopped you in the middle of the word and said it again properly, and the whole line heard her.

You were three quarters of the way through a perfectly ordinary sentence. A stranger. Somebody behind a counter you had never seen before and will probably never see again. And she put her hand up slightly, the way you stop traffic, and said the word the right way, twice, and waited.

And you said it back. And she nodded. And then she carried on with what you had actually come in for.

The woman behind you in the line was looking at her phone. The man behind her was not.

That was six days ago and you have run it about forty times since.

Here is what makes this one different from the ordinary ones, and I want to name it exactly.

She was a stranger. There was no relationship to put it in. When somebody who loves you fixes a word, it lands inside years of them being on your side. When a stranger does it, it arrives with nothing underneath it, and for a second there is no floor.

And it was public. That is the other half. You were corrected in front of people who were not part of the conversation and had no stake in it, and they got to watch.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

That burned, and six days is not too long to still be carrying it.

You are not fragile and you are not making it into more than it was. A public correction from somebody with no warmth in the room is one of the genuinely hard moments in this whole business, and everybody who has learned a language has one of these stories and most of them still remember it.

So I am not going to tell you she was helping. She may have been. It does not reach the place this landed, and I think you have been told that already by somebody who meant well.

Let me agree with you first.

A Stranger Corrected Me In Front Of Everyone

In this will I be confident

There is a line in Psalm twenty seven about where confidence actually sits, and it is not where people usually put it.

Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. (Psalm 27:3, King James Version)

In this. Stay on those two words.

The psalm does not say I am confident because I am strong, or because the host is small, or because I have checked and the war is unlikely. It points at something outside the situation entirely and says the confidence lives over there.

You have a place to put your confidence that has nothing at all to do with how the last six days went. Psalm 27:3 locates it in something outside the encampment entirely, and the Holy Spirit is the one keeping a woman company while she runs a shop counter for the fortieth time.

Now look at the size of what the psalm is willing to sit inside.

An encamped army. A war rising. The psalm does not minimize the trouble to make the confidence work. It leaves the host exactly where it is, full size, and puts the confidence somewhere the host cannot reach.

That is a very different move from being told that the thing was not that bad.

You were never asked to shrink what happened at that counter, and a small event has never once had to be called smaller to be survivable. The Holy Spirit is the one who lets a woman keep the full size of a hard six days, and Psalm 27:3 lets the whole army stand there and still finds somewhere to be confident from.

And here is the third thing, which is the one that reaches a line of strangers.

The psalm is written by somebody being looked at. The whole of Psalm twenty seven is about enemies who watch and want to see him fall. So the verse is not about private courage in an empty room. It is about a man with an audience deciding where to stand.

You have been given the exact verse for a public moment, and being watched has never once changed what a heart is resting on. Psalm 27:3 belongs to somebody with people looking at him, and the Spirit of God is the one who was standing in that line six days ago.

She gave you the word

Here is the practical half, and it may annoy you at first.

You have that word now, and a word put into a mouth at a counter has never once been handed back. Psalm 27:3 keeps the confidence somewhere the encampment cannot reach, and the Holy Spirit is the one who was standing in that line with you.

Say it out loud to yourself right now. The right version, in a stranger's exact accent, with the emphasis in the right place, and it stays for the rest of your life. That is the one word from that whole week that cannot go missing again.

That is what a public correction actually does. It is a terrible way to be taught and it is an extremely effective one, and both of those are true at the same time.

You have been carrying a real burn and a permanent word in the same pocket for six days. The Spirit of God is the one who is with a woman who has run it forty times, and Psalm 27:3 leaves the army standing at full size while it puts the confidence elsewhere.

Now here is what I want you to see about the line of people.

They have forgotten. All of them. The woman on her phone never looked up. The man who watched saw eleven other things that day and none of them belong to him. Nobody in that shop carried it out of the door except you.

That is not a comfort about it being unimportant. It is information about where the event currently lives. It lives in one place now, and you are the one keeping it.

You are holding the only surviving copy of that afternoon, and one moment kept alive by a single person has never once been a verdict from a room. Psalm 27:3 puts the confidence somewhere an audience cannot touch, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman deciding what to do with the only copy.

And here is the cost of the six days, said plainly.

You have not said anything in that language since. Not one sentence, not to anybody, including the people who love you and would never do what she did. The stranger has been given authority over every conversation you might have had this week, and she does not know it and did not ask for it.

You were never required to hand a stranger the week, and one corrected word has never once had the right to close a mouth. The Spirit of God is the one who gets a woman to say something today to somebody kind, and the written word finds confidence in a place the watching crowd cannot reach.

Say it to somebody warm, today

So here is the assignment, and it has a person in it.

Say one sentence out loud to one person, badly, today.

And here is the version built for you. Not the stranger. Do not go back to that counter to prove something. Say it to somebody warm, somebody who is already on your side, and let that be the first mouthful after six days.

And use her word in it. The one she gave you. Put it in the sentence on purpose.

You have the word and you have somebody safe to spend it on, and using it has never once meant she was right about you. Psalm 27:3 keeps the confidence somewhere the encampment cannot reach, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman saying her first sentence in six days.

And here is what to expect, because it will not be what the counter was.

Somebody warm will simply answer you. They will not stop you. If they fix something, it will land inside years of being on your side, and you will feel the difference immediately and it will be enormous.

That difference is the thing to notice, because it tells you what the counter actually was. It was not a report on your language. It was one stranger with a line of people and a way of doing things.

Then stop. One sentence. You may go back into English right after, and you owe nobody a return visit to that shop.

You have permission to end it after one, and one sentence to somebody kind has never once been a small way to start again. The Spirit of God is the one who settles a woman afterward, and Psalm 27:3 hands the confidence over without asking first whether the war has stopped.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has not said a sentence since a stranger stopped her mid word.

Sounding like a beginner is what beginning sounds like, and it has never once been the same as being simple. And that burned, and I am not going to tell you she was helping or that six days is too long to carry it. Psalm 27:3 lets the whole army stand at full size and finds somewhere else to be confident from, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a woman to open her mouth today.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have the word permanently now, and a hard teacher has never once been able to take back what she taught. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman holding a burn and a permanent word in the same pocket, and the written word refuses to shrink the trouble in order to make the confidence work.

You were never required to hand her the whole week, and one stranger at one counter has never once been given authority over a mouth. Psalm 27:3 belongs to somebody being watched by people who want to see him fall, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing with you when you spend that word on somebody kind.

One sentence. One person. Badly.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Six days of running that counter in my head, you have had every sentence I might have said this week. Psalm 27:3 leaves the host encamped and finds somewhere else to be confident from, so by the Holy Spirit I say one sentence to somebody warm today in the name of Jesus.
  2. Authority I handed a stranger, you were a woman behind a counter for ninety seconds and you cannot have the rest of my month. The word puts the confidence where a watching crowd cannot reach it, and by the Holy Spirit I am done carrying the only copy.
  3. Father, You gave a man surrounded and watched a place to stand that the army could not get to. Your word never made him call the war small first, so by Your Spirit I keep the full size of it, and I say her word out loud to somebody who loves me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
