Seven days, seventy words, and you feel exactly the same.
You did it properly. Monday through Sunday, ten a day, out loud, no days missed. You did not cheat it and you did not stretch it. And on Sunday night you sat there and took stock and the honest answer was that nothing had changed.
You could not follow the radio any better. You still froze at the shop. The conversation at your sister in law's went past you exactly the way it did the week before.
And the conclusion arrived on its own: this does not work.
I want to take that seriously rather than talk you out of it, because it is an honest report and you are not somebody who exaggerates.
Here is what I think happened, and it is not about your effort.
You ran an experiment. A good one. You held the method steady for seven days and then looked for a result, which is exactly the right instinct and is how sensible people test anything. And then you measured the result in the only unit you had available, which was how it feels, and how it feels is the one instrument that cannot detect what happened this week.
I want to say the true thing before anything useful.
Nothing you can feel was ever going to have changed by Sunday, and nobody warned you about that, and it is unfair that you found out by being disappointed.
So I am not going to tell you to be patient. Patient is what people say when they have nothing to show you, and it asks you to keep spending on a promise. Let me show you the mechanism instead.

He knoweth not how
There is a short parable in Mark that almost nobody preaches, and it is the only one that answers Sunday night.
So is the kingdom of God, as if a man should cast seed into the ground; And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. (Mark 4:26, 27, King James Version)
He knoweth not how.
Stay there, because that is not a throwaway clause. It is the point of the whole parable. The man does the sowing, and then the growing happens, and the growing is specifically described as invisible to him.
You have been running a process that was never going to report to you, and a thing you cannot feel happening has never once been a thing that is not happening. Mark 4:27 says outright that the man does not know how, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a woman taking stock on a Sunday night.
Now notice what the man in the parable actually does with the not knowing.
He sleeps, and rises, night and day. He does not dig it up to check. He does not stand over it. The parable has him carry on with an ordinary life while the thing he cannot see gets on with itself, and the parable presents that as correct rather than as passive.
You were never given an instrument for measuring this week, and checking on Sunday night has never once been the same as the week not working. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a woman going through a stretch she cannot read, and Mark 4:27 has the man sleep and rise while the growing happens out of sight.
And here is the third thing, which is where the comfort actually is.
The parable does not say the growth might happen. It says the seed springs and grows up, plainly, as a fact, and the only thing in question is the man's knowledge of it. The uncertainty in that verse belongs entirely to him and never once to the ground.
You have no visibility and that has never once been the same as having no result. Mark 4:27 puts all of the not knowing on the man and none of it on the seed, and the Spirit of God is the one with a woman who did seven days and felt nothing.
Seventy words is not a feeling
Here is the practical half, and it is about what was actually available to measure.
Seventy words went in. That is the fact of the week, and it is not in dispute, and it has nothing to do with how Sunday felt.
Now here is why you could not feel them. A word becomes usable at about the fifth or sixth meeting, not the first. Everything you took this week is sitting at meeting one. It is in there, it is real, and it is not yet available to your mouth, and it will become available in about a month when the same words start turning up again in other places.
You measured at day seven for a thing that reports at day thirty.
You have seventy words at their first meeting, and a word that has not surfaced yet has never once been a word that failed to go in. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman who measured on the right day with the wrong instrument, and Mark 4:27 describes a growing that the sower has no access to.
Now here is the harder half, and it is the thing that will save the next month.
Feelings are a terrible unit here and they will mislead you in both directions. There will be a week in April where you feel enormous progress and almost nothing went in, and there will be weeks like this one where seventy real words went in and the needle read zero.
If how it feels is the instrument, you will stop on the true weeks and press on in the false ones.
You are holding an instrument that reads the opposite of the truth about half the time, and a bad measure has never once been better than no measure at all. Mark 4:27 takes the knowing away from the man entirely and leaves the growing intact, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a woman to keep sowing into a week she cannot read.
And here is what to use instead, since something has to be counted.
Count the sowing, not the harvest. Seven days. Seventy words. That is the whole report and it is completely accurate and it needs no feeling attached to it.
You have a number that cannot lie to you, and days sown has never once been a harder thing to count than progress felt. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman on a Sunday night with an honest report and the wrong instrument, and the written word tells of a man who sleeps and rises while it grows.
Ten again today, and count the days
So here is the assignment, and it is the same assignment as last week on purpose.
Learn ten words today, then close the book and do not add more.
Day eight. Same ten. Same ninety seconds. Nothing about the method changes, because the method was never the problem and Sunday was not a verdict on it.
You have a day eight available to you, and one flat week has never once been a report on a method. Mark 4:27 has a man rise night and day while the growing happens where he cannot see it, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman opening it again after a week that felt like nothing.
And here is the one change, which is about what you check.
Stop taking stock. Do not sit down next Sunday and ask how it feels, because that question has no useful answer and it nearly ended this last night.
Write the day number down instead. Eight. Then nine. And when the month turns and words you took in March start arriving in the middle of other sentences, you will have the days written down and you will know exactly where they came from. Then stop at ten, and let the evening close with nothing else asked of you.
You have permission to stop auditing the harvest, and a sower who does not dig it up has never once been the one who lost it. The Spirit of God is the one who settles a woman after ninety seconds on day eight, and Mark 4:27 leaves the man sleeping while the seed does what seed does.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who did seven days properly and felt nothing.
Ten words today is real study, and it has never once needed an hour and a quiet room to count. And your report was honest and I am not going to tell you to be patient. Mark 4:27 says the man does not know how and never once says the seed failed, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a woman to open it again on day eight.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have seventy words at their first meeting, and a word that has not surfaced yet has never once been a word that did not go in. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman who measured on the right day with the wrong instrument, and the written word describes a growing the sower has no access to.
You have no visibility and that has never once been the same as having no result. Mark 4:27 puts every bit of the not knowing on the man and none of it on the ground, and the Holy Spirit is the one with you tonight on day eight.
Ten words. Then close it.
Declare this over yourself
- Sunday night stock take, you measured seventy real words with the one instrument that cannot see them. Mark 4:27 says the seed springs and grows and he knoweth not how, so by the Holy Spirit I take ten words on day eight in the name of Jesus.
- Conclusion that this does not work, you were built out of a feeling on day seven about a thing that reports on day thirty. The word leaves all the not knowing with the man and none of it with the ground, and by the Holy Spirit I am done handing you the verdict.
- Father, You described a man who sleeps and rises while the seed grows where he cannot see it, and You never once called him passive. Your word puts the uncertainty in him and never in the ground, so by Your Spirit I sow again tonight, and I write the day down.
Mark 4:27
