The Language LostNehemiah 4:4

My Relatives Laugh When I Try It

This message is for the woman whose own aunts laugh at her accent in the family language, and who has stopped trying it in front of them

They laughed, and you have not tried one in that kitchen since March.

It was a short word. You had been practicing it, quietly, for about a week, and you said it while the pots were going and two of your aunts looked at each other and laughed, and one of them repeated it back with your accent on it, and the kitchen laughed too.

And you laughed. That is the part you keep going over. You laughed along with them and said something self deprecating and passed the bowl, and then you went out to the car later and sat in it for a minute before driving home.

Here is what makes this one hard to talk about with anybody.

They are not unkind women. They have fed you your whole life. They would come out at two in the morning if you called them, and every one of them loves you, and none of that is in question.

And it still landed exactly the way it landed.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

Being laughed at by people who love you is worse than being laughed at by strangers, not better, and almost nobody will say that out loud.

A stranger's laugh is about a word. A family's laugh is about a place, because it comes from inside the room you are trying to belong in, and it tells you where the edges of that room are. Everybody in that kitchen has the language and you do not, and for four seconds the laugh drew a line, and you were standing on the outside of it holding a bowl.

So I am not going to tell you they meant it affectionately. They probably did. That is not where this landed and you already know it.

My Relatives Laugh When I Try It

Hear, O our God

There is a moment in Nehemiah where the people rebuilding a wall are being mocked, and I want to use it carefully.

The mockers in that chapter were genuine enemies with an interest in the wall not going up. Your aunts are not that and I am not going to pretend they are. What I want is the mechanism, which is what a man did with mockery while he was in the middle of a job.

Hear, O our God; for we are despised. (Nehemiah 4:4, King James Version)

Hear, O our God.

Look at where he sends it. Not back at the mockers. Not into a speech. He turns and hands the whole of it upward, immediately, in one short sentence, and then the chapter continues.

You have somewhere to put the four seconds in that kitchen, and a thing handed upward has never once had to be carried around in a car. Nehemiah 4:4 sends the sting straight to God rather than back into the room, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a woman who has not tried a word since March.

Now notice the words he uses about himself, because he does not minimize.

For we are despised. He does not say it was probably nothing. He does not manage it down into something reasonable. He states plainly, to God, how it landed, and the text lets that stand without one word of correction.

You are allowed to say out loud how much that hurt, and naming the size of it has never once been the same as making it bigger. The Holy Spirit is the one who receives a plain description without adjusting it, and Nehemiah 4:4 lets a man say despised and never once tells him he is overreacting.

And here is the third thing, which is what happens two verses later.

So built we the wall. (Nehemiah 4:6, King James Version)

That is the next thing in the chapter. Not a confrontation, not a withdrawal, not a long recovery. He prayed the short prayer and then he went back to the job in the same afternoon, and the building is the answer rather than a thing he did once he felt better.

You have a next thing that does not wait for the feeling to lift, and going back to the work has never once required the sting to be gone first. Nehemiah 4:6 puts the building immediately after the prayer, and the Spirit of God is the one with a woman who has been sitting in a car park since March.

The laugh was about the surprise

Here is the practical half, and it is about what actually happened in that kitchen.

The laugh was a surprise reflex, and I want to be precise rather than comforting about it.

People laugh at unexpectedness. That is most of what laughing is. A woman they have known for forty years suddenly produced a sound they associate with their mother, in an accent from somewhere else, and the mismatch was surprising, and surprise comes out of people as a laugh before anybody decides anything.

It was not an assessment of your word. Nobody in that room graded you. Something unexpected happened and their faces did what faces do.

You were never being marked in that kitchen, and a reflex has never once been the same thing as a judgment. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman who has replayed four seconds since March, and Nehemiah 4:4 takes the sting upward in one sentence and keeps going.

Now here is the harder half, and it is about what the silence since March has actually built.

Every family has a set of quiet agreements about who does what, and they are not decided, they accumulate. Since March, one agreement in that kitchen has been getting firmer every Sunday: she does not do the language.

Nobody voted for it. Your aunts do not know it exists. But in six months it will be settled, and by then trying a word will be a much bigger event than it would be this Sunday, because it will be a change to something established rather than just a word.

You are standing at the cheapest moment this will ever have, and a quiet agreement has never once been harder to break early than late. Nehemiah 4:6 has the building resume in the same afternoon rather than after a season, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a woman to say something small this week.

And here is the thing about the aunts themselves, said plainly.

They would be delighted. That is the part the four seconds is hiding from you. An older woman who hears a younger one in her family reaching for the language she grew up in is almost never indifferent to it, and the laugh in March was surprise, and the tenth word will not be surprising at all.

The first one is the expensive one. You have already paid for it.

You have already spent the hardest word of all of them, and a first attempt already made has never once had to be made again. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman going back into a kitchen where something happened, and the written word puts the going back immediately after the prayer.

One word, and pick who you say it to

So here is the assignment, and you get to choose the room.

Learn one word your family would have used and say it to somebody in the family.

And you do not have to do it in that kitchen with all of them there. Pick one aunt. The kindest one, the one who did not laugh, or the one who caught your eye afterward.

Say it to her on her own. On the phone if that is easier, or standing in a hallway, or in a car.

You have the right to choose the room this happens in, and one word said to one person has never once counted less than one said to a kitchen. Nehemiah 4:4 hands the sting upward in one sentence and then gets back to the wall, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman standing in a hallway with one aunt.

And here is what to do first, which takes four seconds and changes the rest.

Before you say the word, say the short prayer. Hear, O our God, for that is still sitting in me. Then say the word.

That is the whole of the mechanism in Nehemiah, and it is why the chapter moves so fast: he does not process the mockery, he hands it over and then works. You are allowed to do both things in the same minute. Then stop, because one word is the assignment and nobody owes anybody a conversation in that language today.

You have permission to hand it over and then speak in the same minute, and a sting handed upward has never once needed to be finished with before the next word. The Spirit of God is the one in the hallway when the word comes out, and Nehemiah 4:6 says so built we the wall in the very next breath.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has been quiet in that kitchen since March.

That language is still mine to pick up, and a generation that did not pass it on has never once locked the door on me. And being laughed at by people who love you is worse and not better, and I am not going to tell you they meant it affectionately. Nehemiah 4:4 lets a man say despised out loud to God without one word of correction, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a woman to say something to one aunt this week.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You were never being marked in that kitchen, and a surprise reflex has never once been the same thing as a judgment. The Spirit of God is the one who receives a plain description of how something landed without adjusting it, and the written word sends the sting upward and then returns to the wall in the same afternoon.

You have already spent the most expensive word of all of them, and a first attempt already made has never once had to be made twice. Nehemiah 4:6 puts the building immediately after the prayer, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing in that hallway with you.

One word. One person. This week.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Four seconds in that kitchen in March, you have had every Sunday since and you were never a grade on my word. Nehemiah 4:4 says hear, O our God, for we are despised, so by the Holy Spirit I say one word to one aunt this week in the name of Jesus.
  2. Agreement that I do not do the language, nobody in that family voted for you and nobody knows you exist. The word sends the sting upward and goes straight back to the wall, and by the Holy Spirit I am done letting you harden.
  3. Father, You let a man tell You plainly that he was despised and You never once told him he was overreacting. Your word has him back on the wall in the same afternoon, so by Your Spirit I hand You the four seconds, and I say one word to my aunt.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
