You had a good one and no way to say it.
Somebody said something at the table, and the whole shape of the joke appeared in your head immediately, and you knew it would land, and you knew who it would land on best. You have been doing this your whole life. It is the thing you are actually good at.
And then you sat there and put it together word by word like a man building a fence, and by the time the fence was up the conversation had gone three streets away and nobody needed a fence.
That has happened four times this month.
Here is the part nobody understands about it.
Being funny is not decoration. For you it is how you get close to people. It is how you say I like you without saying I like you, and it is how you take the temperature down when a room gets tight, and it is most of what you offer at a table full of people.
So in that language you have not just lost a skill. You have lost your way in.
They think you are quiet. Some of them probably think you are serious, or hard to read, or a little cold. And you are none of those things, and there is no way at all to tell them so, because telling them would require the exact thing you cannot do.
I want to say the true thing before anything useful.
That is a real loss, and I am not going to call it small.
You are grieving something, and it is not the language. It is the version of you that walks into a room and has it warm inside a minute. That man does not exist in that language yet, and there is nobody there who has ever met him.
Let me agree with you first, and then let me show you something in the passage.

A word spoken in due season
There is a verse in Proverbs that is usually read as being about advice, and it is not only about advice.
A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it! (Proverbs 15:23, King James Version)
Read the first half again, because almost nobody does.
A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth. Not by the answer of somebody else's mouth. His own. There is a gladness that belongs to a person specifically because of what came out of him, and the verse treats that as an ordinary good thing rather than as vanity.
You were built to get joy out of your own mouth, and missing that has never once been a small or silly thing to miss. Proverbs 15:23 names the joy a man gets from his own answer as a good in itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a funny man who has been quiet for four months.
So the thing you are missing is a thing scripture says out loud is worth having. That is worth knowing before we go anywhere else.
Now the second half, which is where the sting is.
A word spoken in due season. In season. On time. Which is exactly the part that has broken, because your words arrive perfectly constructed and forty seconds late.
And here is what I want you to notice. The verse praises the timing. It does not say the word was clever, or long, or well made. It says it arrived when it was wanted.
You have been building the wrong thing, and a good joke assembled slowly has never once been worth more than a small one on time. The Holy Spirit is the one who can move a man to say something before it is finished, and Proverbs 15:23 puts the whole weight on the season rather than the sentence.
That is a change of target, and it is the only change this article is asking for.
Small and on time beats good and late
Here is the practical half, and it is about what a joke actually is.
Translating your humor is the error, and it is an understandable one, and it cannot work.
Your jokes in your own language run on timing, on a word that means two things, on the way you say a thing flat. None of that survives the crossing. You are taking a finished thing and trying to carry it whole into a room it does not fit in, which is why the fence takes so long to build.
You have all the equipment for this and none of it has to be carried over from the old language. Proverbs 15:23 asks for a word in season, which is a small ask, and the Spirit of God is the one with a man who has been carrying whole jokes across a border.
So here is what works instead, and it is much smaller than what you have been attempting.
A noise. A face. A word said at the wrong volume on purpose. Repeating the last thing somebody said with your eyebrows up. Saying the name of a food in a way that makes it clear what you think of the food.
None of that needs vocabulary. All of it is timing, and timing is the thing you actually have.
You are already holding the only part of this that cannot be taught, and it has never once needed the words to work. The Spirit of God is the one who gets a quiet man to make a noise at a table, and the written word puts the value of a word on the season it lands in.
And there is one more thing to see about that table.
They are not waiting for you to be funny. They are waiting for you to be there. The warmth you think you are failing to deliver arrives through participation long before it arrives through wit, and a man who says something small four times in an evening reads as present in a way a man with one perfect line never does.
You were never required to be impressive in that room, and being present has never once needed a punchline attached. Proverbs 15:23 gives the joy to the man for the answer of his own mouth without one word about how good the answer was, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a man at that table.
Say the small one, on time
So here is the assignment, and it is deliberately not funny.
Say one sentence out loud to one person, badly, today.
And here is the version of it built for you. Say a small one, on time. Not the good one. The small one.
Which means the next time the shape of a joke appears in your head, do not build it. Take the first three words of it, whatever they are, and let them out while the moment is still open.
You were never asked to finish it before you spent it, and three words out loud has never once been worth less than thirty in your head. Proverbs 15:23 puts the whole good of a word on the season it lands in, and the Holy Spirit is the one who opens a careful man’s mouth while the moment is still standing.
It will not land the way the whole one would have. Good. That is the assignment working.
You are permitted to spend a good idea badly, and one spent joke has never once been worth less than a perfect one kept in. The Holy Spirit is the one who moves a man to say three words instead of thirty, and Proverbs 15:23 is entirely about the moment the word arrives.
And here is what to expect, because something will happen and it will not be nothing.
They may not get it, and you will feel the small drop of that. Fine. That happens to funny people in their own language constantly and nobody has ever died of it. They may get half of it and laugh at the half, which is also fine, because half a laugh from a real table beats a whole one in your head.
Or one of them may take your three words and finish the joke for you, out loud, and everybody will laugh. That is not a failure. That is a man handing the ball to somebody on his own team.
Then stop. One sentence. You do not owe that room a set.
So here is what I believe is going out over a funny man who has been the quiet one for four months.
Sounding like a beginner is what beginning sounds like, and it has never once been the same as being simple. And losing your way in is a real loss, and I am not going to call it small or tell you to be patient with yourself. Proverbs 15:23 says out loud that a man gets joy from his own mouth, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a careful man to spend three words badly tonight.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have the only half of this that cannot be taught, and timing has never once been something a dictionary handed anybody. The Spirit of God is the one at that table with you, and the written word puts the whole value of the word on the season it arrives in.
You were never the cold one in that room, and four months of building fences has never once changed who walked in. Proverbs 15:23 asks for a word in due season rather than a good one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who will open your mouth while the moment is still standing.
One sentence. One person. Badly.
Declare this over yourself
- Forty seconds of building, you have taken four jokes off me this month and handed back a reputation for being cold. Proverbs 15:23 praises the word that arrives in season, so by the Holy Spirit I spend three words badly today in the name of Jesus.
- Reputation for being serious, you were built out of my silence and you cannot be built out of anything else. The word gives a man joy by the answer of his own mouth, and by the Holy Spirit I am done letting you stand in for me.
- Father, You said a man has joy by the answer of his own mouth and You never called that vanity. Your word praises the word that lands on time rather than the one that lands well, so by Your Spirit I say the small one, and I say it while the moment is open.
