Ten Words Daily1 Kings 19:7

I Did Forty Words Once And Then Nothing

This message is for the woman who goes enormous for one evening and then cannot face it for three weeks, and reads the collapse as her real character

You did forty in one night and then nothing for three weeks.

It was a good night. You remember it. Something lifted, and you sat down at about eight and you were still at it at half past ten, and you went to bed with forty new words and a feeling in your chest like the thing had finally started.

And the next evening you did not open it, because you were tired.

And the evening after that you did not open it, because you were tired and also because opening it now meant matching what you had done, and you did not have another forty in you.

And then it had been a week, and after that it had been three.

Here is what you have concluded, and it is the reason this article exists.

You have decided that the collapse is the true fact about you and the good night was the exception. That you are somebody who goes hard at things and then stops, and that this is a character trait rather than a pattern, and that it has happened enough times now to be settled.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

The forty was not the good part and the three weeks was not the failure, and I think nobody has ever told you that.

What actually happened is mechanical and it has almost nothing to do with your character. You spent everything you had in one evening, and then you set the bar at the height of your best hour, and then you could not clear it, so you stopped trying to. That would happen to anybody and it happens to most people, and the ones it does not happen to are not more disciplined than you. They set a smaller bar.

So I am not going to tell you to be consistent. You know. Being told again by somebody who has never had a night like that one is not what you came for.

I Did Forty Words Once And Then Nothing

The journey is too great for thee

There is a scene in First Kings about a man who had just had an enormous day and then collapsed completely.

Elijah had called down fire in front of a nation, and by the next chapter he was a day out into the wilderness, sitting under a tree, asking to die.

And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee. (1 Kings 19:7, King James Version)

Because the journey is too great for thee.

Now look carefully at what God does with a man in that state, because it is not one word of what you would expect.

There is no rebuke. There is no reminder of the fire. There is no you were doing so well, what happened, and there is no instruction to get up and try again. He is touched, twice, and told to eat.

You have collapsed after an enormous night, and nobody in that passage was ever once scolded for it. 1 Kings 19:7 answers a man on the ground with food and touch rather than with correction, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a woman who has not opened it in three weeks.

Now stay on the sentence itself, because it is the most useful thing in the chapter.

The journey is too great for thee. That is God saying out loud that the size of the thing exceeds what the man can carry. Not that the man is weak. That the journey is too great, which is a statement about the load rather than about the person under it.

You were never being asked to carry the size of what you set that night, and a load that is too great has never once been a report on the one carrying it. The Holy Spirit is the one who names the load out loud instead of naming the failure, and 1 Kings 19:7 puts the difficulty on the journey rather than on Elijah.

And here is the third thing, which is what he gets given.

Bread and water. Twice. Then he sleeps, then he eats again, and only after all that does the journey continue. The recovery is entirely physical and entirely small, and nothing in the chapter asks him to re-commit to anything before he is allowed to eat.

You have been offered something small before anything is asked of you, and a small provision has never once been a lesser answer than a strong word. 1 Kings 19:7 hands a collapsed man bread rather than instructions, and the Spirit of God is the one with a woman who set the bar at the height of her best hour.

The forty is what caused the three weeks

Here is the practical half, and it reverses the story that has been running.

The good night caused the bad month. Those are not two separate events, one impressive and one shameful. The first one produced the second one directly, and until that is seen the cycle repeats forever.

Here is the mechanism. On the night you did forty, you set a standard, and standards in this business are almost never set deliberately. From then on, opening the book meant doing something like forty, because anything less felt like a retreat from your own high water mark.

And nobody has forty in them on a Wednesday.

You have been measuring every ordinary evening against your single best hour, and one good night has never once been a fair thing to be held to. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman who has been failing an exam she set herself, and 1 Kings 19:7 says the journey is too great and does not ask the man to try harder.

Now here is the thing that will be hardest to accept, and I want to say it plainly.

Ten words on a flat Tuesday is worth more than forty on a night when something lifted. Not morally. Practically. Because the ten repeats and the forty does not, and a language is built entirely out of things that repeat.

The forty words from that night are mostly gone now. You could check and you would find that six or seven survived. Three weeks of ten would have been two hundred and ten, met once each, with nothing lifting and nothing costing you anything.

You have been chasing the version of this that cannot repeat, and a thing that cannot happen twice has never once been the thing that builds anything. 1 Kings 19:7 gives a spent man bread and sleep rather than another mountain, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a woman to take ten on a flat evening.

And here is what to do with the belief about your character, said directly.

It is not a character trait. It is a bar height. You have exactly the same equipment as the people you think are more consistent than you, and the only difference is that they never set a number they cannot repeat on their worst day.

You are not somebody who stops, and a pattern with a mechanism in it has never once been the same thing as a character. The Spirit of God is the one who touches a woman on the ground and feeds her rather than assessing her, and the written word calls the journey too great and leaves the man entirely uncriticized.

Ten today, and stop at ten especially tonight

So here is the assignment, and for you the stopping is the entire instruction.

Learn ten words today, then close the book and do not add more.

Ten. Tonight. And when the lift comes, and it will come at about word fourteen, stop anyway.

That is the whole of it. You already know how to do forty. Forty is not the skill you are missing. The skill you are missing is the ability to shut a book while it is still going well, and that is the single thing standing between you and three hundred words a month.

You have the harder half of this already, and stopping at ten while it is going well has never once been a smaller act than carrying on. 1 Kings 19:7 feeds a spent man twice and lets him sleep before anything else is asked, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman shutting a book at ten on a good evening.

And here is why the stopping matters so much for you specifically.

Every time the book shuts at ten on a good night, the bar comes back down to something a Wednesday can clear. It un-sets the standard that the forty set. It takes about a week of that before opening the book stops feeling like a commitment.

And on the evening where you are flat and tired and have nothing, ten will still be available, and you will do it, and there will be no three weeks. Then stop, and let the evening have the rest of itself back.

You have permission to close it while you still want more, and an unfinished feeling has never once been the same as an unfinished day. The Spirit of God is the one who settles a woman after ninety seconds, and 1 Kings 19:7 names a journey too great and hands over bread instead of a demand.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has not opened it in three weeks.

Ten words today is real study, and it has never once needed an hour and a quiet room to count. And the three weeks was not a failure of character, and I am not going to tell you to be consistent as though you had not thought of it. 1 Kings 19:7 answers a collapsed man with food and touch and not one syllable of rebuke, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a wholehearted woman to stop at ten tonight.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You were never being asked to carry the size of what you set that night, and a journey named too great has never once been a report on the one under it. The Spirit of God is the one who names the load out loud rather than naming the person, and the written word puts the difficulty on the road and leaves Elijah entirely uncriticized.

You are not somebody who stops, and a bar height has never once been the same thing as a character. 1 Kings 19:7 feeds a spent man twice before it asks him for anything, and the Holy Spirit is the one with you tonight at about word fourteen.

Ten words. Then close it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Forty words on one good night, you set a bar that no ordinary Wednesday could ever clear. 1 Kings 19:7 says arise and eat, because the journey is too great, so by the Holy Spirit I take ten words tonight and shut it in the name of Jesus.
  2. Belief that I am somebody who stops, you are a bar height wearing a character and you were never the truth about me. The word puts the difficulty on the journey and never on the one carrying it, and by the Holy Spirit I am done reading you as settled.
  3. Father, You met a man flat on the ground after an enormous day and You gave him bread and touched him twice. Your word never asked him to re-commit to anything before he was allowed to eat, so by Your Spirit I take my ten, and I close it while I still want more.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
