One Whole SentenceIsaiah 35:8

I Read The Sign Without Stopping

This message is for the man who read a whole notice in passing and was two streets away before he understood that he had not worked it out

You were two streets past it before you noticed what had happened.

It was a notice on a door. Nothing remarkable: the sort of thing that tells people when a place is open and when it is not, four lines of it, handwritten. You looked at it the way anybody looks at a sign, which is to say for about a second and a half, and you carried on walking.

And somewhere around the corner of the next street your own head caught up with you and said: you read that.

Not worked it out. Not stood in front of it doing the arithmetic with your lips moving, the way you have stood in front of about four hundred signs in the last three years. You walked past a notice and the meaning came with you.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

You then stopped in the street and tried to take it away from yourself, and that is the reason this is still unfinished in you two days later.

You went back over it. Maybe you only got the gist. Maybe the words were ones you see on every door in the country and it was pattern rather than reading. Maybe you would not be able to do it again on a different sign.

So I am not going to help you finish that examination. Let me show you a road instead.

I Read The Sign Without Stopping

The wayfaring men shall not err therein

There is a road described in Isaiah, and the striking thing about it is who it is built for.

And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. (Isaiah 35:8, King James Version)

The wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.

Now that is an odd promise and it is worth stopping on. It does not say the wise shall not lose their way. It says that even people with no particular capacity for it will not go wrong on that road, and the reason is not that they have become clever.

The reason is in the road. It is built so that it can be walked by somebody who cannot navigate.

You have been walking on something built to be walked rather than worked out, and a road that carries a man has never once required him to be good at it. Isaiah 35:8 puts the not going wrong in the road rather than in the traveler, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing two streets past a notice with a man.

Now stay on the word wayfaring, because it carries the whole picture.

A wayfaring man is somebody in the middle of a journey, on his way somewhere, not stopping to study anything. He is moving. He is not an expert on that road and he never becomes one, and he gets where he is going anyway.

That is exactly the difference between the four hundred signs and this one. You did not stop. You were a wayfaring man rather than a student, and the thing worked anyway.

You were moving rather than studying, and a meaning that arrived while you kept walking has never once been a smaller event than one worked out standing still. The Holy Spirit is the one who is with a man who did not stop, and Isaiah 35:8 describes somebody in the middle of a journey rather than somebody at a desk.

And here is the third thing, which is the part that meets your examination.

Though fools. The verse allows for the person being no good at this. It builds that possibility straight into the promise rather than treating it as an objection, and it still says they shall not err.

The doubt you raised in the street is already inside the verse and it does not change the outcome.

You have raised an objection the written word already allowed for, and a doubt about your own capacity has never once been able to undo something that happened. Isaiah 35:8 writes the fools into the promise instead of arguing with them, and the Spirit of God is the one with a man who stopped in a street to take something off himself.

The not stopping is the whole finding

Here is the practical half, and it is about the second and a half.

The speed is the event. Not the comprehension.

Four hundred signs have been understood in three years. Every one of those took somewhere between ten and forty seconds, involved a conscious decision to work something out, and produced a small satisfaction afterward. That is a skill and it has been in hand for a while.

This one took a second and a half and there was no decision anywhere in it. Nothing was attempted. The meaning was simply present in you as you kept walking, the way English is. Those are two different operations and only one of them is reading.

You have crossed from one operation into another one, and a thing that happened without being attempted has never once been the same as a thing achieved. Isaiah 35:8 puts the not going wrong into the road rather than into the traveler, and the Holy Spirit is the one who was walking beside a man for that second and a half.

You have done something different rather than something better, and a meaning that arrived without a decision has never once been the same operation as one that was produced. The Spirit of God is the one who knows what happened in a second and a half on a street, and Isaiah 35:8 puts the reliability in the road rather than in the skill of the walker.

Now here is the answer to the pattern objection, because it is the strongest one you raised.

The objection may well be right. It may have been a common form of words that turns up on many doors, and pattern recognition may be most of what happened.

And that is what fluent reading is. That is the whole mechanism. Nobody reading their own language decodes it letter by letter, and the entire difference between a reader and a learner is that a reader recognizes shapes at speed and a learner assembles them.

You did not fall short of reading. You did the thing itself.

You have been calling the mechanism a cheat, and pattern at speed has never once been anything other than what reading actually is. Isaiah 35:8 makes a road that works for people who cannot navigate, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows the difference between assembling and recognizing.

And here is the thing about the examination, said plainly.

You did it in the street, within about ninety seconds, and by the time you got home the event had been reduced to a maybe. That is faster than most people get their coat off.

There is no rule anywhere requiring a man to audit a good thing before he is allowed to keep it.

You have been auditing things faster than you receive them, and a good minute has never once required clearance before a man could hold it. The Spirit of God is the one who was with a man in the first ten seconds rather than the ninetieth, and the written word writes the doubters into the promise without letting them change it.

Write it down and keep the paper

So here is the assignment, and it means going back.

Write down the sentence you understood and keep the paper.

Go back to that door. It is two streets away and you know exactly which one it is, and the notice will almost certainly still be there.

Copy the four lines out onto a piece of paper, by hand, exactly as they are written.

You have a door two streets away and four lines on it, and a thing copied out by hand has never once been as easy to reduce as a thing remembered. Isaiah 35:8 puts the whole promise into a road rather than into the walker, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man standing at a door with a pen.

And here is what to write underneath it, which matters more than the copying.

One line, in your own words. Something like: I read this walking past and did not stop.

Because in three months there will be a sign that defeats you, and the whole account will darken, and the conclusion that year has gone nowhere will arrive with it. On that day a piece of paper with four lines and one sentence in your own handwriting is the only thing that will hold.

Then stop, because one piece of paper is the assignment and nothing else is asked of you today.

You have permission to keep evidence of a Tuesday afternoon, and a record written on the day has never once been the same as making too much of something. The Spirit of God is the one who will be standing with a man in front of a sign that defeats him in three months, and Isaiah 35:8 keeps the road reliable for people who are no good at roads.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who took it away from himself in the street.

That was a real thing that happened, and one sentence understood has never once been too small to be worth the gladness. And you raised three objections within ninety seconds, and I am not going to help you finish that examination. Isaiah 35:8 writes the fools straight into the promise rather than arguing with them, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who walks a man back to that door today.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You were moving rather than studying, and a meaning that arrived while you kept walking has never once been a smaller event than one worked out standing still. The Spirit of God is the one who knows what happened in a second and a half on a street, and the written word puts the reliability in the road rather than in the skill of the walker.

You have been calling the mechanism a cheat, and pattern at speed has never once been anything other than what reading actually is. Isaiah 35:8 makes a road that works for people who are no good at roads, and the Holy Spirit is the one with you at that door with a pen.

Write it down. Keep the paper.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Ninety seconds of examination in the street, you had a real thing reduced to a maybe before I got my coat off. Isaiah 35:8 says the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein, so by the Holy Spirit I go back and copy that notice out today in the name of Jesus.
  2. Objection that it was only pattern, you describe exactly what reading is in every language on earth. The word builds a road for people who cannot navigate and still says they shall not err, and by the Holy Spirit I am done calling the mechanism a cheat.
  3. Father, You built a highway that a wayfaring man can walk without being any good at roads, and You wrote the fools into the promise rather than arguing with them. Your word puts the not going wrong in the road, so by Your Spirit I go back to that door, and I copy the four lines out.
