Nobody Told Me I Had Done Well

Nobody in that room knew what had just happened, and that is the whole difficulty.

The exchange was perfect. About forty seconds of it, three turns, entirely in the language, and you understood all of it and were understood, and nothing in it had to be repeated.

And then it ended and the evening carried on and there was a tray of coffee coming in, and the two people sitting nearest had been talking about something else the whole time.

You sat there with the thing still going in your chest and nobody to hand it to.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

You need a witness for things, and that is not vanity, and I do not think anybody has ever told you it is not.

Something does not finish in you until somebody has seen it. That is how you have been built, and it is most of why you are good at what you do, and it is why forty perfect seconds with no observer has ended up feeling like something that did not entirely take place.

So I am not going to tell you it does not matter whether anybody saw. Let me show you a verse about being seen.

Thy Father which seeth in secret

There is a line in the Sermon on the Mount about things done where nobody is watching.

That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. (Matthew 6:4, King James Version)

Thy Father which seeth in secret.

Now the striking thing is the tense and the construction. It does not say he will find out. It does not say he learns about it later, or that a record is kept somewhere and read afterward.

Seeth. Present, continuous, ongoing. He is the one who sees in secret, which is a description of what he is doing at the time rather than of what he discovers afterward.

You have had somebody present in the room while it was happening, and a thing seen as it occurred has never once been the same as a thing reported later. Matthew 6:4 puts the seeing in the present tense at the moment itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a man who had nobody to tell.

Now stay on the word secret, because it is not being used the way people use it now.

Secret there does not mean hidden or concealed. It means unwitnessed by people. The whole passage is about things done without an audience, and it never once treats that as a lesser condition or as something to be endured.

An unwitnessed thing in that verse is a normal kind of thing rather than a diminished one.

You have never once been in a diminished condition for having no audience, and a thing nobody saw has never once been a thing that happened less. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present at things nobody else notices, and Matthew 6:4 treats the unwitnessed as ordinary rather than as second best.

And here is the third thing, which is the last word in the verse.

Openly. The reward is not described as secret in return. The seeing happens where nobody else is, and the answer comes out into the open, which means the passage does not ask anybody to be permanently content with no acknowledgment.

You are not being told to stop needing a witness. You are being told there was one.

You were never asked to give up wanting to be seen, and a thing witnessed by God has never once been a thing with no witness. Matthew 6:4 ends on openly rather than on secret, and the Spirit of God is the one who was in that room during all forty seconds.

The forty seconds are not in anybody's account but one

Here is the practical half, and it starts with an inventory of who knew.

Four people were in that room. You knew. The man across from you knew something had gone smoothly and had no idea what it cost. The two by the window had their backs to it.

So the complete human record of that exchange is: one man who was there and does not know what it meant, and you.

That is a real problem and it is not a feeling. There genuinely is no external record.

You have an event with almost no human record, and a thing nobody can confirm has never once been a thing that is only in a head. The Spirit of God is the one who was in a room with four people and saw what one of them did, and Matthew 6:4 puts the seeing in the present tense while it is happening.

Now here is the thing about the man you were talking to, because he is worth a second look.

He did not adjust. Nothing in his face changed, he did not slow down, he did not check whether you had followed, and he moved on to the coffee without a flicker.

You have been reading that as him not noticing. There is another reading, and it is at least as likely: there was nothing to notice. A man does not remark on an ordinary conversation, and what you are calling nobody saw is also what it looks like when something has stopped being remarkable.

You have been reading silence as absence, and a thing that draws no comment has never once been a thing that fell short. Matthew 6:4 treats the unwitnessed as an ordinary condition rather than a lesser one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows what a man's face did and did not mean.

And here is the thing about needing a witness, said plainly and without asking you to change.

You will still need one next time. This article is not going to rebuild you, and it should not try, and a man who needs things confirmed is not going to stop needing that because somebody wrote him a paragraph.

What can change is what gets used as the witness. Not nobody. Something.

You have been choosing between a person and nothing, and a witness has never once had to be somebody in the room to be a witness. The Spirit of God is the one who was present for the whole forty seconds, and the written word promises an open answer to a thing done where nobody was watching.

Write it down and keep the paper

So here is the assignment, and it is the witness you can actually have.

Write down the sentence you understood and keep the paper.

All three turns, as near as you can get them. What he said, what you said, what came back, what you said to that.

On paper, in your own hand, tonight.

You have a record available that does not require another person, and a thing written on the day has never once been a smaller witness than somebody's memory. Matthew 6:4 has the seeing happen at the moment rather than in a report afterward, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man at a table with a pen.

And here is the part that is specifically for you, because of how you are built.

Write the date on it. And the room. And who else was there.

Because what you actually need is not praise, it is confirmation that it occurred, and a dated record in your own handwriting is confirmation of exactly that kind. It is not a substitute for a person. It is a different and better thing for this particular purpose, because a person would have forgotten by Christmas and the paper will not.

Then stop, because one piece of paper is the assignment and nothing else is asked of you today.

You have permission to confirm a thing to yourself in writing, and a dated record has never once been the same as needing nobody. The Spirit of God is the one who will still be the witness of it in ten years, and Matthew 6:4 ends on an open answer to a thing done in an empty room.
