I Stopped AgainEcclesiastes 3:1

I Stopped Because Life Happened

This message is for the man who stopped when his father got sick, and who is calling that a failure of discipline when it was not one

You stopped in March, and you have been calling it a failure of discipline ever since.

Here is what else was happening in March. Your father went into hospital. You were driving up on a Tuesday and a Friday, two hours each way. You were on the phone to your sister most nights and you were the one who talked to the doctors, because you are the one who does that in your family.

And somewhere in the middle of that, the book stopped being opened.

And when you describe those months now, you say that you let it slide.

I want to name what that phrase is doing, because it is doing something quite unfair.

Let it slide implies a man with an ordinary March who did not bother. It implies slack, and there was no slack. There was a hospital and a highway and a sister who needed somebody steady, and a man who was steady for all of it.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

You did not fail at the language in March. You were doing something else, and the something else was harder and mattered more, and you did it.

So I am not going to tell you to forgive yourself. That phrase assumes there was an offense and I do not think there was one. And I am not going to tell you the language did not matter, because it does and it still does, and pretending otherwise would be a cheap way past this.

Let me show you a verse about how time is actually shaped.

I Stopped Because Life Happened

To every thing there is a season

There is a sentence at the start of Ecclesiastes three that everybody has heard and almost nobody applies to themselves.

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. (Ecclesiastes 3:1, King James Version)

To every thing there is a season.

Now the striking thing is the flatness of it. There is no moral weighting in that sentence anywhere. It does not say the good seasons and the bad ones, or the productive ones and the wasted ones. It describes time as having shape, and different things belonging to different parts of it.

You have been living inside a season the written word describes as ordinary, and a stretch given to one thing has never once been a stretch wasted on nothing. Ecclesiastes 3:1 puts shape into time without putting a grade on any part of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a man who has been calling March a failure.

Now look at what the chapter does immediately after that line.

It lists opposites. A time to plant and a time to pluck up. A time to keep silence and a time to speak. Every pair has two halves, and neither half is the failed version of the other one.

A time to keep silence is not a man failing to speak. It is a season with its own content.

You were in a season with its own content, and a time given to one thing has never once been the failure of the other. The Holy Spirit is the one who knows what a man was actually doing between March and August, and Ecclesiastes 3:1 gives every purpose its own time without ranking any of them.

And here is the third thing, which is the phrase at the end.

Under the heaven. That is the whole arrangement being described as something with a roof over it. The seasons are not just happening to people at random. The chapter puts them inside something ordered, which means a season does not have to be understood at the time to have been a season rather than a failure.

You have never once needed to understand a season in order for it to have been one, and a hard stretch has never once been outside the arrangement. Ecclesiastes 3:1 sets the whole of it under the heaven, and the Spirit of God is the one who was on that highway on a Tuesday and a Friday.

The account you keep is wrong

Here is the practical half, and it is about the record.

The account of March to August has one line on it, and the line says: stopped, no excuse.

That is not a record, it is a verdict with the evidence removed. Here is what an honest entry would look like. March to August: father in hospital, four hours of driving twice a week, primary contact with the medical staff, sister supported nightly, employment maintained, household maintained, language paused.

Every item on that list is a real thing you did. The last one is the only one that gets remembered.

You have been reading one line out of a page you actually filled, and a paused thing has never once been the only item on a season's account. The Spirit of God is the one who has the whole of that list, and Ecclesiastes 3:1 gives every purpose a time of its own.

Now here is why the false account matters practically, because this is not only about being fair to yourself.

A man who believes he failed in March believes he is likely to fail again. That is the mechanism. The conclusion you drew is not sitting quietly in the past, it is doing work in the present, and it is why picking the book up again feels like exposing yourself to the same result.

Correct the record and the fear changes, because the thing you are afraid of repeating never happened.

You have been afraid of repeating something that did not occur, and a season that was lived rightly has never once been a pattern to dread. Ecclesiastes 3:1 refuses to grade any part of the shape of time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a man to open a book without bracing.

And here is the part about seasons ending, said plainly.

They do end. That is the other half of the verse and it is the half that matters now. A time to every purpose means the season that stopped you is not the one running this week, and the arrangement that made March impossible is not the arrangement of this week.

The question is not whether you will fail again. It is simply what time it is now.

You are standing in a different season than the one that stopped you, and a time that has passed has never once still been running. The Spirit of God is the one who knows exactly what this week actually contains, and the written word puts a time to every purpose under the heaven.

Open it once, in this season

So here is the assignment, and it is aimed at now rather than at March.

Open it once today without going back to the beginning of anything.

Open it wherever it opens. Take ten words. Shut it.

And do not open at the page you were on in March, because that page belongs to a different season and it will bring the whole of that spring into the room with it.

You have a book that does not have to be opened at March, and a page from another season has never once been the only door in. Ecclesiastes 3:1 gives every purpose its own time, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man opening something in a different month entirely.

And here is the one thing to say out loud before you open it, because the record needs correcting and it takes about eight seconds.

Say the real list out loud. I was driving to the hospital twice a week and talking to the doctors and holding my sister up.

That is not self justification. It is the true entry, and the one line version has been standing in for it since August, and eight seconds of accuracy is enough to change what opening a book feels like. Then stop, because ten words is the assignment and today owes you nothing further.

You have eight seconds of true account to speak over a season, and an accurate record has never once been the same as an excuse. The Spirit of God is the one who has the whole list of what a man did in a hard spring, and Ecclesiastes 3:1 gives that stretch its own place in the shape of time.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man who has been calling March a failure.

I can start today from where I am, and three stops have never once disqualified a fourth beginning. And you did not let anything slide, and I am not going to ask you to forgive yourself for something I do not think was an offense. Ecclesiastes 3:1 puts shape into time without grading one part of it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a steady man to open a book today.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have been reading one line out of a page you actually filled, and a paused thing has never once been the only item on a season's account. The Spirit of God is the one who holds the whole of that list, and the written word gives every purpose a time of its own without ranking any of them.

You are standing in a different season than the one that stopped you, and a time that has passed has never once still been running. Ecclesiastes 3:1 sets the whole arrangement under the heaven, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows what this week actually contains.

Ten words. Once. Today.

Declare this over yourself

  1. One line account of March to August, you say stopped and no excuse and you left the whole page off. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says to every thing there is a season, so by the Holy Spirit I say the true record out loud and take ten words today in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of repeating the spring, you brace against a failure that never actually occurred. The word gives every purpose a time of its own and grades none of them, and by the Holy Spirit I am done bracing against you.
  3. Father, You put shape into time and You set the whole of it under the heaven, and You never once called one season the failed version of another. Your word gives a hard spring its own place, so by Your Spirit I open it in this month, and I take ten.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
