I Stopped AgainGalatians 6:9

I Stopped When It Got Hard And I Know Why

This message is for the woman who quit at the exact point it stopped being fun, and has decided that tells her something permanent about herself

It stopped being enjoyable in about the ninth week, and you stopped in the tenth.

You can date it precisely, which is unusual and is worth noticing. The first eight weeks were genuinely good. Everything was new, everything you learned was immediately visible, and every evening produced something you could feel.

And then somewhere around the ninth week the returns changed. You were still doing the same amount and nothing seemed to be arriving, and the words got longer and less obliging, and the pleasant feeling went out of it entirely.

And in the tenth week you stopped, and you have not opened it since.

Here is the conclusion you drew, and it is the reason you are reading this.

You only do things while they are fun. That is the verdict, and it has spread beyond the language, because once you had it you looked around and found four other things it explained.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

Something real happened in the ninth week and it was not a character flaw, and nobody has ever told you what it was.

So I am not going to tell you the hard part is where the growth is. That sentence is true and it is also the kind of thing that gets said by people who are not currently in the hard part, and it lands as a rebuke.

Let me show you a verse that assumes the tiredness rather than scolding it.

I Stopped When It Got Hard And I Know Why

Let us not be weary in well doing

There is a sentence in Galatians written to people who were already tired, and the tone of it is the first thing to notice.

And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:9, King James Version)

Let us not be weary in well doing.

Now the first thing in that verse is an assumption rather than an instruction. It assumes weariness is what happens in well doing. It is not written to people who might get tired if they are careless. It is written to people who are tired because that is what the activity does to a person.

You have been experiencing the thing the written word expects rather than something unusual, and getting tired in a good work has never once been a report on the worker. Galatians 6:9 assumes the weariness before it says anything about it, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a woman who stopped in the tenth week.

Now I want to be careful with the middle of that verse, because it can be misused.

In due season we shall reap. That is not a promise that you will end up speaking that language, and nothing on this site will tell you it is. The apostle is talking about a harvest in God's economy, not a guarantee about anybody's project. Reading it as a promise about the language would be dishonest and it would break the first time a year went by.

What it does say, and this is the part that reaches you, is that the arriving and the doing are on different schedules.

You have been judging a thing by when it arrives rather than by what is being put in, and a season that has not come yet has never once meant nothing was happening. The Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a woman going through a stretch where nothing shows, and Galatians 6:9 puts the reaping in a season of its own rather than alongside the work.

And here is the third thing, which is the last clause and the one that does the work.

If we faint not. Faint is not the same word as tired. The whole sentence assumes the tiredness. Fainting is what happens when somebody stops, and the verse distinguishes carefully between being worn out and going down.

You are allowed to be completely worn out and still be standing, and weariness has never once been the same thing as fainting. Galatians 6:9 keeps the two words apart in one sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one with a woman who has not opened a book since the tenth week.

The ninth week is a real event

Here is the practical half, and it is about what actually changed.

The ninth week is a thing that happens to everybody, and it has a mechanism. In the first weeks you learn the words that do the most work. The commonest hundred words in any language cover an enormous proportion of ordinary speech, so every one of them arrives with a visible payoff and you feel the return immediately.

Then they run out. From about week nine the words on offer appear less often, so each one produces less visible change, and the return per evening drops sharply while the effort stays exactly the same.

That is not you losing interest. That is the shape of the material.

You have been reading a change in the material as a change in yourself, and a drop in visible return has never once been a drop in the work being done. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman who can date the exact week, and Galatians 6:9 assumes the weariness and then tells the difference between it and fainting.

Now here is the part that reframes the verdict you drew.

You did not stop when it stopped being fun. You stopped when it stopped showing. Those are different things, and the difference matters enormously, because one of them is about pleasure and the other is about evidence.

A person who works for eight weeks with visible results and then stops when the results go invisible is not somebody who needs entertainment. She is somebody who was working without knowing whether the work was landing, and no evidence came, and she reasonably concluded that it was not.

You were never somebody who only does things while they are enjoyable, and eight weeks of steady work has never once been the record of a person chasing fun. Galatians 6:9 separates the being tired from the giving out, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows the difference between a woman who quit and a woman who got no evidence.

And here is what was actually happening in weeks nine and ten, said plainly.

The words were still going in. That is the flat fact. A word learned in week nine goes in exactly as well as a word learned in week two, and the only thing that changed was how often you would see it afterward.

The invisibility was not the absence of progress. It was the absence of a receipt.

You have weeks nine and ten sitting in you right now, and an unnoticed word has never once been an unlearned one. The Spirit of God is the one who holds what a woman put in during a stretch that showed her nothing, and the written word puts the reaping in a different season from the sowing.

Open it once with no evidence expected

So here is the assignment, and the expectation attached to it is the important part.

Open it once today without going back to the beginning of anything.

Ten words. And expect nothing to happen. No feeling, no visible return, no sense that anything has arrived.

That is not a low bar. It is the accurate bar for where you are in the material, and setting it correctly is what makes the eleventh week possible.

You have a stage in this where nothing shows, and ten words with no return attached has never once been worth less than ten with a feeling on top. Galatians 6:9 puts the reaping in its own season and refuses to attach it to the evening's work, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman opening a book expecting nothing.

And here is the one thing to watch for instead of the feeling, because you will need something.

Watch for a word you took in week two turning up inside a sentence somewhere in the next month. On a sign, in a song, in something somebody says.

That is the evidence, and it arrives late and from outside, which is why nothing you do in an evening will ever produce it. Weeks nine and ten are not paid in the evening. They are paid in a shop in six weeks. Then stop, because ten words is the assignment and tonight owes you nothing at all.

You have a payment coming from somewhere other than the evening, and an evening that shows nothing has never once been an evening that did nothing. The Spirit of God is the one who has the whole of what went in during a quiet stretch, and Galatians 6:9 keeps the weariness and the fainting apart.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who stopped in the tenth week.

I can start today from where I am, and three stops have never once disqualified a fourth beginning. And something real happened in week nine, and I am not going to tell you the hard part is where the growth is while you are standing in it. Galatians 6:9 assumes the weariness before it says one word about it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a woman to open a book tonight expecting nothing.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have been reading a change in the material as a change in yourself, and a drop in visible return has never once been a drop in the work being done. The Spirit of God is the one who knows the difference between a woman who quit and a woman who got no evidence, and the written word separates the being tired from the giving out.

You have weeks nine and ten sitting in you right now, and an unnoticed word has never once been an unlearned one. Galatians 6:9 puts the reaping in a different season from the sowing, and the Holy Spirit is the one with you tonight when nothing shows.

Ten words. Tonight. Expecting nothing.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Ninth week where it stopped being fun, you were a change in the material and I read you as something permanent about me. Galatians 6:9 says let us not be weary in well doing, so by the Holy Spirit I open it tonight expecting nothing in the name of Jesus.
  2. Verdict that I quit when it gets hard, you were drawn from eight weeks of steady work with no receipt at the end. The word keeps the weariness and the fainting in two different places, and by the Holy Spirit I am done letting you explain four other things.
  3. Father, You assume the tiredness before You say a word about it, and You never once treat it as a fault in the worker. Your word puts the reaping in a season of its own, so by Your Spirit I open it tonight, and I expect nothing.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
