You go first in English now, and you have told yourself it is manners.
It is a small, smooth thing and it happens before anybody else in the conversation has a chance to do anything. You open in English, warmly, straight away, and then the whole exchange happens in English and nobody has to negotiate anything and nobody is put in an awkward position.
You have been doing it for about five months.
And the effect of it, which you have not said out loud to anybody, is that you have not spoken a sentence of that language to a living person since roughly April.
Let me describe what is actually happening, because the story you have been telling about it is not quite the story.
It presents as consideration. You are sparing them the decision. You are saving the person behind the counter from having to work out whether to switch, saving the colleague from having to slow down, and every one of those is a genuine kindness and you do genuinely mean them.
And it has the exact effect of never being switched on again, which is a thing you have not been switched on for five months, and the two of those are not a coincidence.
I want to say the true thing before anything useful.
You built something clever out of good material and it is costing you the whole project.
So I am not going to tell you to stop being so considerate. Consideration is not the problem and it is one of the better things about you, and being told to care less about other people would be bad advice from anybody.
Let me show you where the actual mechanism sits.

The fear of man bringeth a snare
There is a line in Proverbs about a particular kind of trap, and the first thing to notice is that the trap is described as a snare rather than a wall.
The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. (Proverbs 29:25, King James Version)
Bringeth a snare.
A snare is not a barrier. Nobody walks into a snare and knows it. It is a small mechanism, usually concealed, that closes quietly and that the animal in it often does not notice until it tries to move, and it is specifically designed to be invisible to whatever it catches.
You have been caught by something built to be invisible, and a snare has never once been the same thing as a failure of nerve. Proverbs 29:25 calls it a snare rather than a wall, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a woman who has not said a sentence since April.
Now stay on the phrase the fear of man, because it needs handling honestly.
It does not mean cowardice. That is the reading most people are handed and it is too narrow. The fear of man is a whole family of things that orient a person around other people's comfort and other people's opinion, and a great deal of it looks like courtesy, and some of it genuinely is courtesy.
Which is exactly why it makes such a good snare. Nobody suspects a kindness.
You were never being cowardly, and a trap that looks like manners has never once announced itself as a trap. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a considerate woman what her courtesy has been doing, and Proverbs 29:25 names the mechanism rather than the character of the one caught in it.
And here is the third thing, which is the second half of the verse and the part that matters.
But whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe. The verse does not offer bravery as the alternative. It does not say the cure for the fear of man is a stronger person. It offers a different thing to be oriented around, which is a substitution rather than an act of will.
You have never once been asked to become braver about this, and a different thing to lean on has never once been the same as being told to try harder. Proverbs 29:25 offers a substitution rather than a stiffer spine, and the Spirit of God is the one with a woman who has been protecting everybody in the room for five months.
They were not going to be embarrassed
Here is the practical half, and it starts with a correction about what is actually being prevented.
The awkwardness being saved from them is smaller than it looks, and most of it was never theirs.
Here is what actually happens when somebody hears a learner open in their language. They make a quick decision. It takes no effort, they make decisions like it forty times a day, and whichever way it goes they have not been put in a difficult position. The cost to them is roughly nothing.
The cost was never theirs. It was yours, and it is the two seconds where you do not yet know which way it will go.
You have been carrying a cost and calling it somebody else's, and two seconds of not knowing has never once been an imposition on anybody. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman who has been generous with a thing that only ever cost her, and Proverbs 29:25 calls the whole mechanism a snare and never once calls the person weak.
Now here is what the going first has actually removed, and it is not only practice.
It has removed the possibility of the good outcome. Sometimes they stay in the language. Sometimes they are delighted, and slow down, and you get four minutes of exactly what you need from somebody who wanted to give it.
By opening in English you have made that impossible in every single conversation for five months. You did not just avoid the bad result. You closed the door on the good one, and the good one happens more often than you would guess.
You have been declining something that was going to be offered, and going first has never once left room for anybody to say yes. Proverbs 29:25 puts the whole difficulty in a snare rather than in a person, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who has not let anybody answer her since April.
And here is the thing about five months, said plainly and without any scolding.
Five months is a long time, and the arrangement has gone nearly invisible, which is what a snare does. There is no decision being made each time. It has become the way your mouth opens.
That is worth knowing because it means a decision will not fix it. Only a specific action will, with a specific person, on a specific day.
You are not going to think your way out of this, and one arranged attempt has never once been the same as a resolution to do better. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a woman to pick a person and a day, and the written word offers a substitution rather than a stronger will.
Let somebody else pick the language
So here is the assignment, and it is about who chooses.
Try again with the same person, in the same language, once more this week.
Pick one person. Somebody you see regularly, somebody warm, and somebody who has had five months of being opened to in English.
And open in the language. Two sentences. Then let them do whatever they do.
You have one conversation to hand back to somebody else, and letting another person pick the language has never once been the same as imposing on them. Proverbs 29:25 names the snare and offers something else to lean on, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman opening her mouth first in the language for the first time since April.
And here is the part to hold when the two seconds arrive, because they will.
That gap, between your sentence ending and their answer starting, is the whole snare. It is the only moment that has actually been difficult in five months, and it is about two seconds long, and the going first exists entirely to avoid it.
Stand in it. Do not fill it. Let them answer in whatever they answer in, and then carry on warmly either way. Then stop, because one conversation is the assignment and nobody owes anybody a policy change today.
You have permission to stand in two seconds without filling them, and a silence you did not close has never once been rudeness. The Spirit of God is the one in the gap with a woman waiting to hear which language comes back, and Proverbs 29:25 promises safety to the one leaning somewhere else.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has not said a sentence of it since April.
They were being kind and I am still allowed to try, and one switch back has never once been a verdict on my attempt. And the consideration is real and it is one of the better things about you, and I am not going to tell you to care less about other people. Proverbs 29:25 calls it a snare rather than a weakness, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a considerate woman to open in the language this week.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have been carrying a cost and calling it somebody else's, and two seconds of not knowing has never once been an imposition on anybody. The Spirit of God is the one who shows a courteous woman what her courtesy has been doing, and the written word names the mechanism and never once the character of the one caught in it.
You have been declining something that was going to be offered, and going first has never once left room for anybody to say yes. Proverbs 29:25 offers a different thing to lean on rather than a stiffer spine, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing in those two seconds with you.
One conversation. One person. This week.
Declare this over yourself
- Five months of going first in English, you have looked like manners and cost me every conversation. Proverbs 29:25 says the fear of man bringeth a snare, so by the Holy Spirit I open in the language with one person this week in the name of Jesus.
- Two seconds before their answer starts, you are the whole trap and you are two seconds long. The word offers somewhere else to lean rather than a stronger spine, and by the Holy Spirit I am done filling you in advance.
- Father, You call it a snare and not a weakness, and You never once tell the one caught in it to be braver. Your word offers a different thing to trust instead, so by Your Spirit I open my mouth first, and I let them choose what comes back.
