On The Phone There Is No Face To Read

It rang again on Thursday and you watched it ring.

You knew who it was. You knew roughly what she wanted. You had even said something close to the right sentence to her face two weeks ago and it had gone fine.

And you sat there with your hand flat on the table beside the phone until it stopped, and then you sent a message instead, in English, and she wrote back kindly, and the whole thing was fine.

That is the third time this month.

And in person you manage. That is the part that makes no sense to anybody you have tried to explain it to. In a room you do perfectly well. You catch half the words and you read the rest off a face, off a hand, off the way somebody leans in, and between the two you get there and people barely notice.

Take the face away and there is nothing left but sound, and the sound goes past you at a speed you cannot stop.

I want to say the true thing before I say anything useful.

That is not silliness and it is not avoidance. It is an accurate assessment of a real gap.

You have been quietly running on two channels, and one of them just got switched off. Anybody would slow down. A phone in another language is genuinely harder than a room in another language, and every person who has ever learned one will tell you the same thing if you ask them.

So I am not going to tell you to just pick it up. You have heard that. It is not wrong and it does not reach where this actually lives.

Let me agree with you first.

He wakeneth mine ear

There is a verse in Isaiah about a mouth and an ear, and the order of them is the whole point.

The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. (Isaiah 50:4, King James Version)

The tongue first, and then the ear.

Notice that the ear is not simply handed over finished. It is wakened, and it is wakened morning by morning, which means it was asleep and it takes repeating.

You have an ear that is being wakened rather than one that failed to arrive, and a slow ear has never once been a shut one. Isaiah 50:4 has the waking happen morning after morning instead of all at once, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a woman who watched her phone ring on Thursday.

That word wakeneth is doing a lot of work and it is worth staying on it.

An ear that is being wakened is not broken. It is not late. It is in the middle of a process that has a morning in it and then another morning, and the passage describes that as the ordinary way this goes rather than as a delay.

You were never issued a defective ear, and every ear that has ever learned a second language was wakened exactly this slowly. The Holy Spirit is the one doing the waking in a woman who catches half the words in a room, and Isaiah 50:4 puts the whole thing on a schedule of mornings.

And there is a second thing here that matters more for a phone than anything else in the verse.

The one being described is not a beginner. He has the tongue of the learned. And his ear still has to be wakened, every morning, repeatedly. Which means the ear work never stops being ear work, and it does not belong to the bottom of the ladder.

You are doing the same work the fluent are still doing, and an ear in training has never once been the mark of somebody at the beginning. Isaiah 50:4 gives a wakened ear to the same person it gave a learned tongue, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does that waking morning by morning.

A phone is the hardest room there is

Here is the practical half, and it starts with something nobody tells beginners.

The phone is not the basic version of talking. It is the advanced version, and it has been failed as an advanced test and graded as though it were the easy one.

Think about what is actually missing. No face. No hands. No lips to watch. No pause while somebody pours water. The line compresses the sound, and people speak faster on a phone than they do in a room because there is nothing else to do with the time.

You lost your best channel and kept the hardest one, and then measured yourself against the room.

You have been marking yourself against a test you were never sitting, and a hard room has never once been the same as a failure in it. The Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who does perfectly well in person and freezes at a ringtone, and Isaiah 50:4 describes an ear that is still being wakened in somebody already fluent.

Now here is the thing that makes a phone different in the other direction, and it is good news.

Nobody can see you either.

You can have the sentence written down in front of you. You can hold a piece of paper with three words on it and read them out and the person on the other end will never know. You can put your finger on the line. You can look completely blank while you work it out and nothing about your face has to behave.

In a room you are performing with your whole body. On a phone only the sound of you has to show up.

You have been handed a room where nobody can watch you think, and that has never once been available to you in person. Isaiah 50:4 speaks of a word in season for somebody weary, which is a small and specific errand, and the Spirit of God is the one with a woman holding a piece of paper with three words on it.

And here is what the message in English is costing, said plainly.

Every time you answer in text, you teach that person one more time that this is how the two of you do it. Not deliberately. She is being kind and practical and she likes you. But the channel sets itself after a while, and the two of you will end up in English permanently by accident, and neither of you will have chosen it.

You are the one who sets what this becomes, and three missed calls has never once locked a door on a friendship. The Spirit of God is the one who gets a woman to pick up on the fourth, and the written word keeps waking an ear morning after morning without ever calling the previous morning a waste.

Pick it up with paper in your hand

So here is the assignment, and it has a phone in it.

Say one sentence out loud to one person, badly, today.

And the version built for you is this. Make the call yourself, at a time you choose, with the sentence written on paper in front of you. Do not wait for it to ring. Ringing is somebody else picking the moment.

Write down three words. Not a script. Three words. Then dial.

You are permitted to read it off a page, and reading it out has never once made the sentence less said. Isaiah 50:4 has a tongue given for a small errand rather than a performance, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who dialed on purpose with a piece of paper in her hand.

And here is what to do when the answer comes back too fast, because it will.

Say the one word you caught. Out loud. Just that word, with a question in your voice. She will slow down and say the sentence again around it, and you will get more of it the second time, and that is not a humiliation. It is the single most normal thing that happens on a phone in any language on earth.

Then stop. One sentence and one word back is the whole assignment, and you may go into English afterward with nothing owed to anybody.

You have permission to end it after one, and one call has never once been a promise of a conversation. The Spirit of God is the one who settles a woman back into her chair after she hangs up, and Isaiah 50:4 leaves the ear still being wakened tomorrow morning too.
