Ten Words DailyZechariah 4:10

Ten Words Feels Like Cheating

This message is for the woman who does the ten words and then discounts them, because anything that easy cannot be the real work

You did the ten words and then you took them away from yourself.

This is the pattern and you have run it about nine times now. You open it, you take the ten, you say them out loud, you close it. Ninety seconds. And somewhere in the next twenty minutes a small voice arrives and says that was not really anything.

And by bedtime you have quietly filed the day under nothing done.

It is worth looking at that voice properly, because it is not a stupid voice and it has a reasonable case.

It says ten words is not study. It says that at that rate the thing would take a lifetime. It says that anything you can do standing at a counter in the time it takes a kettle to boil cannot possibly be the mechanism by which adults learn languages, and that you are playing at it, and that somewhere out there people are doing this properly.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

That voice is not wrong about arithmetic and it is entirely wrong about you, and I want to separate those two things carefully.

Because you are not somebody who avoids hard work. That is the thing nobody would guess from the outside of this. You have done hard things. You finish what you start in every other part of your life, and the reason the ten words bothers you is not that you want an easier route. It is that an easy route feels like it must be the wrong one.

So I am not going to tell you ten words is enough, as though enough were the question. Enough is exactly the frame that keeps discounting it. Let me show you something else instead.

Ten Words Feels Like Cheating

Who hath despised the day of small things

There is a question in Zechariah that is asked rather than answered, and the asking is the point.

The people had come back and started rebuilding the temple, and the foundation they laid was small, and there were men standing there who remembered the first one and were not impressed.

For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel. (Zechariah 4:10, King James Version)

Who hath despised the day of small things.

Stay on the word day, because it is doing something people miss. It does not say the day of a small thing. It says the day of small things, as though smallness were a season somebody passes through rather than a verdict on the work.

You have been standing in a day the written word already has a name for, and a small beginning has never once been the same thing as a failed one. Zechariah 4:10 calls it a day rather than a size, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a woman who filed ninety seconds under nothing done.

Now look at who is being asked the question, because it is not the builders.

It is the watchers. The ones standing at the edge with their arms folded, measuring this foundation against the one they remember. The rebuke in that verse is aimed entirely at the assessing, and never once at the work.

And you have been doing both jobs. You lay the ten words and then you walk round to the other side and fold your arms and look at them.

You have been the builder and the watcher in the same ninety seconds, and nobody has ever once had to carry both. The Holy Spirit is the one who does the encouraging in a woman who has been doing her own discouraging, and Zechariah 4:10 puts the question squarely to the ones with their arms folded.

And there is a third thing in the verse, which is the plummet.

The plummet is a weighted line. It is the tool that tells a builder whether what he has laid is true. And the verse says they shall see it in his hand and rejoice, which means the gladness comes from the work being straight rather than from the work being big.

You have been measuring the wrong quantity, and a straight line has never once needed to be a long one to be straight. Zechariah 4:10 puts the rejoicing on the plummet rather than on the size of the foundation, and the Spirit of God is the one with a woman who has done this nine times and counted none of them.

Nine days is not nothing

Here is the practical half, and it starts with a number nobody has added up.

Nine times ten is ninety words.

That number has not once been allowed to sit still and be looked at. Every one of those days got filed under nothing done, individually, on the day, so the total was never permitted to exist. Ninety words is a functioning market vocabulary. Ninety words is enough to ask for things, thank people, say where you live and what you do and who came along with you.

And by your own accounting, you have done nothing for nine days.

You have ninety words that you have refused to count, and a total nobody adds up has never once stopped being a total. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman who files every ninety seconds under nothing, and Zechariah 4:10 asks who it is that despises a day of small things.

Now here is the thing about the voice that says at this rate it would take a lifetime, because it deserves a real answer.

It is right that ten a day is slow. It is wrong about the alternative, and that is where the whole argument collapses. The alternative on offer is not forty words a day. The alternative is the four months where you did nothing at all, waiting to do it properly, which is the actual choice in front of you and has always been.

Ten a day beats nothing a day by an infinite margin, and that is not encouragement, it is arithmetic.

You are not choosing between slow and fast, and the honest comparison has never once been the one that voice offers. Zechariah 4:10 refuses to compare the new foundation to the remembered one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a woman to count what she actually laid.

And here is what the discounting is really protecting, said plainly.

If the ten words do not count, then nothing has started, and a thing that has not started cannot yet fail. Calling it nothing keeps the whole project safely in the future where it cannot disappoint anybody.

That is not laziness. It is the opposite. It is somebody who cares enough about doing this well to be frightened of having begun.

You have already begun, and the day that was filed under nothing has never once been erased by the filing. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman who would rather not have started than start badly, and the written word names the smallness a day rather than a judgment.

Ten today, and write the total down

So here is the assignment, and there is one small addition to it.

Learn ten words today, then close the book and do not add more.

Same ninety seconds. Same counter. Same ten. Do not make it bigger today to prove something to the voice, because bigger is exactly what it wants and bigger is not the argument.

And then do this one extra thing. Write the running total on a piece of paper. Ninety. Then a hundred tomorrow.

You have a real total sitting there, and ninety words have never once stopped being ninety because somebody refused to count them. Zechariah 4:10 names the smallness a day rather than a verdict on the work, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman writing a number on an envelope.

Not a tracker. Not a streak. One number on one piece of paper, which you may lose, and which exists only so that the total has somewhere to live other than inside the voice that discounts it.

You have a total that deserves to exist outside your own head, and one number on paper has never once been the same as keeping score. Zechariah 4:10 puts the rejoicing on a plummet held in a hand, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman writing ninety on the back of an envelope.

And here is what to expect when the voice arrives afterward, because it will arrive on schedule.

Let it talk. Do not argue with it about whether ten is enough, because that argument cannot be won and does not need to be. Look at the number on the paper instead.

The number does not argue. It just sits there being a hundred. Then stop, because ten is the assignment and the day owes you nothing more than that.

You have permission to close it after ten and let the voice say what it likes, and a finished ninety seconds has never once become undone by being criticized. The Spirit of God is the one who settles a woman after she shuts the book, and Zechariah 4:10 asks the watchers the question rather than the builders.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who has done ninety seconds nine times and counted none of them.

Ten words today is real study, and it has never once needed an hour and a quiet room to count. And the voice is not stupid and its arithmetic is not wrong, and I am not going to tell you ten is enough as though enough were the question. Zechariah 4:10 aims its whole question at the watchers with their arms folded and never once at the builders, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a woman to write the total down today.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have ninety words that were refused a place to exist, and a total nobody counted has never once stopped being a total. The Spirit of God is the one who does the encouraging in a woman who has been doing her own discouraging, and the written word calls the smallness a day rather than a verdict.

You have already begun, and calling a finished thing nothing has never once put it back in the future. Zechariah 4:10 puts the rejoicing on a plummet held in a hand rather than on the size of the stones, and the Holy Spirit is the one with you when you shut the book tonight.

Ten words. Then close it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Voice that arrives after I close the book, you have filed nine finished days of ten words under nothing done. Zechariah 4:10 aims its question at the ones with folded arms, so by the Holy Spirit I take ten words today and write the total down in the name of Jesus.
  2. Habit of inspecting my own foundation, you are the builder and the watcher at once and nobody was ever meant to be both. The word puts the rejoicing on the plummet and not on the size, and by the Holy Spirit I am done walking round to the other side.
  3. Father, You asked who it is that despises the day of small things and You never answered it, because the question was the rebuke. Your word calls the smallness a day rather than a verdict, so by Your Spirit I take my ten, and I let the total exist.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
