Somebody asked you at the reunion and you said no.
They asked whether you speak it. And the true answer is complicated, and there was no time for a complicated answer standing by a table with a paper cup, so you said no, and smiled, and they moved on, and you felt something small and bad about it for the rest of the afternoon.
Because the true answer is that it is your family's language and you have about forty words of it.
And there is a version of that answer where you say yes, a little, and it belongs to my family, and every time you have got close to saying that out loud something has stopped you.
Let me try to name what stops you, because I think it has never been said plainly.
It feels like claiming something you did not pay for. Your grandmother paid for it. Your mother half paid for it. You were raised in another country in another language with the whole of the easier life that came with that, and to now stand at a table and call yourself part of a thing you cannot speak feels like taking credit for somebody else's cost.
I want to say the true thing before anything useful.
That instinct is honorable and it is wrong, and it has been keeping you outside a door that has never once been locked.
It is honorable because it is the instinct of somebody who does not want to take what is not hers. That is not a small thing and it is why you are the kind of person you are. And it is wrong because belonging in a family is not a thing that gets earned by fluency, and no family on earth has ever operated that way.
So I am not going to tell you to be more confident. Confidence is not the missing piece and it never was. Let me show you where belonging actually comes from in the passage.

The Spirit itself beareth witness
There is a line in Romans about how somebody knows they belong, and the mechanism in it is not what anybody expects.
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. (Romans 8:16, King James Version)
The Spirit itself beareth witness.
Now look at where the evidence comes from in that verse, because this is the whole of it. The belonging is not established by performance. It is not established by how well somebody speaks, or how long they have been in the house, or what they can produce on request.
It is testified to, from outside the person, by somebody who already knows.
You have never once had to prove a belonging that somebody else testifies to, and a thing borne witness to has never once needed to be earned first. Romans 8:16 puts the evidence in the mouth of the Spirit rather than in the hands of the child, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing with a woman who said no at a reunion.
Now stay on the word children, because the verse could have used a different one.
Not students. Not members. Not qualified persons. Children, which is a word about origin rather than about attainment, and which nobody has ever had to demonstrate competence in order to be.
A child who cannot speak yet is not less of a child. That is not a sentimental point, it is the plain meaning of the word.
You were named by where you came from and never once by what you can do, and a child who cannot speak yet has never once been less of a child. The Holy Spirit is the one who bears witness to a woman who has forty words, and Romans 8:16 uses the word for origin rather than the word for achievement.
And here is the third thing, which is the part that reaches a paper cup at a reunion.
The witness in that verse is joint. The Spirit bears witness with our spirit. Two things agreeing, which means the internal sense of belonging is not being overruled or replaced. It is being confirmed by somebody with better standing.
You have an inward pull toward that language that is being agreed with rather than corrected, and a longing for a family thing has never once been a claim on something foreign. Romans 8:16 has two witnesses saying the same thing, and the Spirit of God is the one who has been confirming what a woman keeps refusing to say out loud.
Nobody in that family is grading you
Here is the practical half, and it starts with what actually happened at that table.
They were not asking for a qualification. That is the thing to see first.
When somebody at a family reunion asks whether you speak it, they are not administering anything. They are asking a warm question, usually because they would like to speak it with you, and the answer they were hoping for is a yes with anything at all after it.
You gave them a no, and a door closed that neither of you wanted closed.
You have been answering an exam question that nobody set, and a warm question has never once been the same thing as a test. The Spirit of God is the one with a woman who felt something small and bad for a whole afternoon, and Romans 8:16 establishes belonging by testimony rather than by performance.
Now here is the thing about cost, which is the real weight you have been carrying.
The belief is that your grandmother paid and you did not. And there is something true underneath it: she did pay, and heavily, and an easier life followed from choices she made in a hard season.
But look at what she was buying. Nobody has ever gone through what she went through in order to keep a language away from her grandchildren. Whatever it cost her, the purpose of it was the people coming after, and you are the people coming after.
You were the reason for the cost rather than a person who avoided it, and an inheritance has never once been stolen by the one it was left to. Romans 8:16 makes the belonging a matter of whose you are, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman who has been calling herself a thief at a family table.
And here is the practical size of what you are refusing, said plainly.
Forty words is not nothing. Forty words is a greeting, a thank you, a question about somebody's health, the names of four foods and a blessing. That is enough to open a conversation with an older relative who has been waiting years for one of the younger ones to try.
You have been holding forty words behind a rule that nobody in that family voted for.
You are the only one enforcing the standard you have been failing, and a rule nobody else agreed to has never once been a rule. The Spirit of God is the one who has been agreeing with the pull a woman keeps ignoring, and the written word calls the belonging a witnessed thing rather than an earned one.
One word, said to somebody in the family
So here is the assignment, and it is not a speech at a reunion.
Learn one word your family would have used and say it to somebody in the family.
One word. A specific one, the kind that only comes out of a house rather than a book. The word your grandmother used for a particular dish, or for the front room, or the thing she said when somebody sneezed.
Ask somebody older what it was. That question is half the assignment and it is the half that opens everything.
You have one question to ask and one word to carry away, and asking an older relative what a word was has never once been an imposition on them. Romans 8:16 has the belonging testified to rather than demonstrated, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman asking her aunt what her grandmother used to call it.
And here is what to expect, because it is rarely small.
The person you ask will probably not simply answer. They will tell you where the word came from, or who else said it, or that nobody has asked them that in twenty years. Older relatives are frequently waiting for exactly this question and nobody is asking it.
Then say the word back to them, out loud, badly. That is the second half and it is the part that makes it yours rather than a fact you collected. Then stop, because one word is the assignment and nobody is owed a conversation in that language today.
You have permission to stop after one word, and a word asked for and said back has never once required you to speak the language to have it. The Spirit of God is the one in the room when an aunt hears a word said back to her, and Romans 8:16 puts two witnesses in agreement about whose somebody is.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman who said no at a reunion and felt bad about it all afternoon.
That language is still mine to pick up, and a generation that did not pass it on has never once locked the door on me. And the instinct not to claim what you did not pay for is honorable, and I am not going to tell you to be more confident. Romans 8:16 establishes a belonging by testimony rather than by performance, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a careful woman to ask her aunt one question today.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You were named by where you came from and never once by what you can produce, and a child who cannot speak yet has never once been less of a child. The Spirit of God is the one who bears witness alongside a woman with forty words, and the written word chooses the word for origin rather than the word for achievement.
You were the reason for the cost rather than somebody who dodged it, and an inheritance has never once been stolen by the one it was left for. Romans 8:16 has two witnesses agreeing about whose somebody is, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been confirming the pull you keep refusing to say out loud.
One word. One person. Today.
Declare this over yourself
- Feeling that I claim what I never paid for, you have kept me saying no at family tables for years. Romans 8:16 says the Spirit itself beareth witness that we are the children of God, so by the Holy Spirit I ask for one family word today and say it back in the name of Jesus.
- Rule that I must speak it to belong, you were never voted on by anybody in that family. The word makes the belonging a testified thing rather than an earned one, and by the Holy Spirit I am done enforcing you on myself.
- Father, You bear witness alongside a person rather than examining them, and You use the word for children and not the word for students. Your word never once made belonging into a performance, so by Your Spirit I ask my aunt what my grandmother called it, and I say it back badly.
