I Know The Sounds But Not The Meanings

You can say it perfectly and you do not know what it means.

Four things, maybe five. The blessing your grandfather said over food, which you can produce with the pauses in the right places and the rise at the end. Something your mother said when you hurt yourself. A greeting. A short thing said at doorways.

And if somebody asked you what any individual word inside them meant, you would have nothing.

You have carried those four phrases for about thirty years like stones in a pocket.

Here is the thing that turns them over in your hands at odd moments.

It feels like a trick. As though you are doing an impression of a man who speaks the language, and if anybody ever answered you in it the whole thing would collapse in one second, and everyone would see that there is nothing behind the sounds.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

That is not nothing behind the sounds, and I think somebody should have told you that a long time ago.

What you are carrying is the actual shape of the language. The rhythm of it, the places where a sentence lifts, the sounds your mouth can already make that nobody in your street can make. That is the hardest part of a language and the part adults almost never get, and you have had it since you were four years old and have been treating it as an embarrassment.

So I am not going to tell you that four phrases is a good start, as though you were a beginner. You are not a beginner. You are somebody with the foundations already in and no floor on top of them, which is a completely different situation.

He hath inclined his ear unto me

There is a line in Psalm one hundred and sixteen about being heard, and the direction of it matters.

Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. (Psalm 116:2, King James Version)

He hath inclined his ear.

Inclined is a leaning word. It is the movement somebody makes toward a person who is difficult to hear, or who is quiet, or who is saying something imperfectly. The psalm has God doing that leaning first, before the calling, and the calling is the response to it rather than the cause.

You have been heard by somebody who leans in first, and a sound made without its meaning has never once failed to reach God. Psalm 116:2 has the ear incline before a word is called, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a man who has carried four phrases for thirty years.

Now stay on the order of the verse, because it is the opposite of what you would expect.

The leaning comes first. Then the calling, and the calling lasts a lifetime because of what came first. Nobody in that verse has to say it properly in order to be leaned toward.

And your grandfather's blessing has been going up in your mouth for thirty years with no meaning attached, and it has been landing.

You were never required to understand it for it to count, and a blessing said by sound has never once been refused for being said by sound. The Holy Spirit is the one who has been receiving four phrases from a man who does not know what they say, and Psalm 116:2 puts the leaning before the language.

And here is the third thing, which is what the verse says about the rest of the life.

Therefore will I call upon him as long as I live. That is a man deciding to keep speaking because of how he was received. The whole arc of the verse goes from being leaned toward to a lifetime of talking.

You have been received in a way that makes the next word possible, and being heard badly has never once been the same as not being heard. Psalm 116:2 turns one act of leaning into a lifetime of calling, and the Spirit of God is the one with a man turning four stones over in a pocket.

The hard half is already in you

Here is the practical half, and it is an inventory of what those four phrases actually hold.

The sounds are already in. Stop and take that seriously for a minute, because it is the thing adults spend years failing to get.

A man who starts this at forty with no family behind him will spend two years sounding wrong. His mouth cannot make the shapes. His ear cannot hear the difference between two words that are obviously different to everybody else in the room. That is the long slow expensive part, and there is no shortcut through it, and most people never fully arrive.

You arrived at four years old. You have the mouth and the ear already.

You have the expensive half of this in you already, and a sound you can make without thinking has never once been a small possession. The Spirit of God is the one with a man who has been calling his own foundation an embarrassment, and Psalm 116:2 has the ear lean toward somebody before a word is said properly.

Now here is the part about meaning, and it is smaller than you think.

Meaning is the cheap half. Meaning is a list, and lists can be learned at ten a day standing at a counter. What cannot be learned that way is the rhythm, and the rhythm is already in your mouth.

So the work in front of you is not learning a language. It is attaching meanings to sounds you already own, which is a different job and a much shorter one.

You have been looking at the wrong job, and attaching a meaning to a sound you already hold has never once cost what learning the sound costs. Psalm 116:2 receives a man before he has the words, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows what is already in a mouth that has carried four phrases since childhood.

And here is where to start, which is closer than you think.

Start inside the four phrases. Take the blessing your grandfather said and find out what one word in it means. One. Not the whole thing.

Because the moment one word in that blessing opens, the blessing stops being a sound and starts being a sentence, and the other words in it become the next four things you learn, and you will have begun from inside something that is already yours instead of from page one of something that is not.

You have a doorway that is already in your mouth, and a word found inside a blessing you have said for thirty years has never once been a beginner's first word. The Spirit of God is the one with a man opening his grandfather's blessing, and the written word leans in toward somebody before the language is right.

One word, and say it to family

So here is the assignment, and it has a person in it.

Learn one word your family would have used and say it to somebody in the family.

And for you the word is already chosen. Take one word out of your grandfather's blessing. Find out what it means. That is the first half.

Then say it to somebody in the family. Out loud, in a sentence, on purpose. Your parent, an uncle, a cousin who is on the same side of this as you.

You have one word to find and one person to say it to, and a single word said inside a family has never once been a small thing in that family. Psalm 116:2 has God incline toward a man first and then receive a lifetime of calling, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man saying his first understood word to his own uncle.

And here is what to expect, because something will happen and it will probably not be small.

They may be more moved than anybody expects. That happens with this. A word coming back into a family where it stopped is not a neutral event, and the person it is said to may go quiet, or tell you something about your grandfather nobody has ever told you, or correct the pronunciation gently and then say it again themselves.

Any of those is the thing working. Then stop, because one word is the assignment and nobody is owed a conversation.

You have permission to stop after one word, and one word returned to a family has never once obligated anybody to a project. The Spirit of God is the one in the room when the word lands, and Psalm 116:2 turns a single act of leaning into a lifetime of speaking.
