I Answered Without Translating First

He asked you something across the truck bed and you answered him before you had built it.

That is what happened and it is why you have been turning it over since Tuesday. Normally there is a process. Somebody says a thing, you work out what it means, you decide what you want to say back, you put it together, and then you say it, and the whole operation takes about four seconds and everybody waits.

On Tuesday you skipped the middle. He asked, and something came out of you, and it was a correct sentence, and it was in his language, and you had not made it.

You stood there with a feed sack in your hands feeling quite strange about it.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

Nothing was given to you in that yard, and I am going to be plain about that because this is the exact place people go wrong.

That sentence came out of two years of study and repetition and saying things badly to people, and it went in the ordinary way, and there is no shortcut and I am not offering you one.

What changed is where it was stored, and that is worth understanding rather than mystifying.

Write it in their hearts

There is a promise in Jeremiah about a change of location.

I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts. (Jeremiah 31:33, King James Version)

Write it in their hearts.

Now I want to be careful, because that verse is about the law of God and not about anybody's vocabulary, and it would be cheap to pretend otherwise. What it gives you is not a promise about a language. It is a picture of a thing moving from one place to another, and that picture is exactly what happened in that yard.

The law did not change. The location did.

You have had something change location rather than arrive, and a thing that moved inward has never once been a thing that was newly delivered. Jeremiah 31:33 describes a relocation rather than a first giving, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing in a barn lot with a man and a feed sack.

Now notice what the verse implies about the before, because this is the part that reaches Tuesday.

The law was already known. It had been on tablets and on scrolls, external, consulted, referred to. The change being promised is not that people would learn it. It is that it would stop being a thing consulted and start being a thing carried.

That is precisely the difference between what you did on Monday and what happened on Tuesday.

You have stopped consulting something and started carrying it, and a thing carried has never once been the same object as a thing looked up. The Holy Spirit is the one who knows the difference between what is on a page and what is in a man, and Jeremiah 31:33 names the inward parts as the new location.

And here is the third thing, which is about what it feels like from the inside.

Nothing in that verse suggests the person would notice it happening. There is no moment described where somebody feels the writing occur. It is a change of condition rather than an event, and the only way anybody would ever know is by what came out afterward.

You did not feel it happen. You found out afterward, in a yard, holding a sack.

You have found out about a change rather than experienced one, and a condition has never once announced itself while it was forming. Jeremiah 31:33 describes the writing without describing any sensation of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who was in a man on the Monday as well as the Tuesday.

Where the four seconds went

Here is the practical half, and it is about the operation you skipped.

The four seconds were a translation job, and translation is a completely separate skill from speaking.

Every sentence said in that language for two years has actually been two jobs: an English sentence worked out, and then converted. That is two operations, and the second one is difficult, and it is what has been making you slow rather than any shortage of words.

On Tuesday only one operation ran. The English step did not happen at all.

You have been carrying twice the load of anybody fluent, and slowness caused by doing two jobs has never once been the same thing as not knowing the words. Jeremiah 31:33 moves the thing inward so that it can be used rather than fetched, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows what a man has been doing every time he opens his mouth.

You have been doing two jobs where the fluent do one, and a translated sentence has never once been the same amount of work as a spoken one. The Spirit of God is the one with a man who has been running two operations for two years, and Jeremiah 31:33 moves a thing from the outside to the inward parts.

Now here is why it happened on that particular morning, and it is not mysterious.

He asked across a truck bed with both men lifting something. Your hands were full, your attention was on the sack, and there was no spare capacity for the four second operation.

The English step got skipped because there was no room for it. Which means the sentence was always available directly, and the only thing that had ever been in the way was having enough spare attention to do it the long way round.

You have had this available underneath for longer than you know, and a shortcut found under pressure has never once been a thing that was not already there. Jeremiah 31:33 puts the law in the inward parts where it can be used rather than consulted, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows what was already in a man before Tuesday morning.

And here is the thing about it not happening since, said plainly, because it has now been six days.

It will be intermittent for a long time. The direct route and the four second route will both be running for months, and which one fires depends on tiredness, on how complicated the sentence is, and on whether anybody is watching.

Tuesday was not the day it switched over. It was the first time the new route ran, and the first time is the only one that proves it exists.

You have proof of a route rather than a permanent change, and one occurrence has never once needed a second one to have happened. The Spirit of God is the one with a man on the six days since, and the written word describes a change of location without describing the day it completed.

Write it down and keep the paper

So here is the assignment, and it is exactly as small as it sounds.

Write down the sentence you understood and keep the paper.

The sentence you said on Tuesday, and the question he asked that produced it. Both halves, as near as you can get them.

On paper, in pencil, in your own hand, and then put it somewhere it will not get thrown out.

You have a Tuesday that deserves a piece of paper, and a thing written down in a man's own hand has never once faded the way a memory does. Jeremiah 31:33 records a change of location as something worth putting in writing, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man at a kitchen table with a pencil.

And here is why, and it is a practical reason rather than a sentimental one.

In four months there will be a flat stretch with the four second route the only one running, and by then Tuesday will have been filed as a fluke or as evidence of going backward.

On that day the paper is the only thing in the world that will argue with you. Not a memory, which will have been trimmed by then. A sentence in your own handwriting that you could not have produced on Monday.

Then stop, because one piece of paper is the assignment and nothing else is required of you today.

You have permission to keep evidence against a bad month that has not happened yet, and a written record has never once been the same as making too much of one morning. The Spirit of God is the one who will be with a man in the flat stretch in four months, and Jeremiah 31:33 puts the law where a man carries it rather than where he looks it up.
