I Did It To Somebody Else Last Week

You did it to somebody last Tuesday and you heard yourself do it.

A man came into the office and started a sentence in English, which is his second language and not his good one, and he was building it slowly, and about four words in you finished it for him and answered in his.

You meant it kindly. That is the whole of your intention and you would swear to it.

And in the second after you said it, you recognized the shape of the thing from the inside of it, because you have been on the other end of exactly that move about six hundred times.

Here is what you saw, and it is the reason this article is worth your ten minutes.

You saw that there was no cruelty in it anywhere.

That is the uncomfortable part. You had been carrying an idea, without ever inspecting it, that the people who switch on you are making some small judgment. And then you did it, and there was no judgment in you at all. There was a line behind him and a thing on your desk and a reflex about ninety milliseconds long.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

You have just been handed the most useful piece of information available on this subject and it arrived in a way that felt bad.

So I am not going to tell you off about Tuesday, because there is nothing to tell you off about. And I am not going to tell you that you should have let him finish, although you probably should have. What that second gave you is worth more than a correction.

All things whatsoever ye would

There is a sentence in Matthew that everybody can quote and almost nobody uses in the direction it is actually built to run.

Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. (Matthew 7:12, King James Version)

All things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you.

Now the standard reading runs outward. You know what you want, so give it to other people. That is true and it is not what happened on Tuesday.

What happened on Tuesday ran backward through the same verse. You did a thing to somebody, and the doing of it told you something about what is done to you, and the verse works perfectly well in that direction because it assumes the two situations are the same situation.

You have been given a reading of your own experience from the other side of it, and a thing understood by doing it has never once been the same as a thing explained to you. Matthew 7:12 treats what is done to you and what you do as one subject, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing in an office with a man who heard himself do it.

Now notice what the verse assumes about people, because it is more generous than most of us are.

It assumes that what you would want is a reliable guide to what somebody else would want. That only works if people are fundamentally alike in these things, and the verse takes that for granted without arguing for it.

Which means the man in your office was not a different kind of creature from you, and neither is the woman who switches on you at the counter.

You have never once been dealing with a different species of person, and somebody who switched on you has never once been operating on a mechanism you do not have yourself. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man his own reflex on a Tuesday afternoon, and Matthew 7:12 assumes people are alike enough for one to read the other.

And here is the third thing, which is the weight the verse puts on it.

For this is the law and the prophets. That is an enormous claim to attach to a practical instruction. He is saying the whole of it, the entire moral architecture, collapses down into this one movement between what you want and what you give.

You have been handed the central mechanism rather than a tip, and a thing scripture calls the law and the prophets has never once been a small matter. Matthew 7:12 puts the whole weight of the law on one exchange, and the Spirit of God is the one with a man who finished somebody else's sentence for him.

Now you know what it was

Here is the practical half, and it is an inventory of what Tuesday actually taught you.

There is no mystery left in a switch now, because one of them got opened up on Tuesday.

There was a line. There was a thing on your desk. There was a wish for the exchange to be smooth for him. There was no assessment of his level, no opinion about his effort, and absolutely nothing that could reasonably be called a verdict.

Apply that backward to every switch that has ever happened to you, because it is the same mechanism running in somebody else.

You have been reading verdicts into a reflex you now know from the inside, and a mechanism you have operated yourself has never once contained the judgment you assumed was in it. The Spirit of God is the one who lets a man see the thing from the other end, and Matthew 7:12 runs the same traffic in both directions.

Now here is what to do with the man in your office, because he is still there.

Let him finish next time. That is the whole of it. Stand there the extra eleven seconds, keep your face doing ordinary things, and let him get to the end of the sentence himself.

You now know exactly what those eleven seconds are worth to somebody, because you have wanted them yourself six hundred times, and you have never once had them given to you deliberately.

You are able to hand somebody the eleven seconds you have never been given, and a small thing nobody has ever done for you has never once been a small thing to do for them. Matthew 7:12 turns what you want into what you do, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man standing quietly while somebody else builds a sentence.

And here is the last thing, said plainly, because it is the reason this article sits in this category rather than another one.

It works on you too. Every time you let somebody finish, the idea that a switch is a verdict gets a little weaker, because you are watching it happen without any verdict in it. That is the cure, and it does not arrive by being argued at.

You are being healed of this by doing it rather than by being told, and a thing learned in the hands has never once needed to be believed first. The Spirit of God is the one who teaches a man through his own reflexes, and the written word collapses the whole law into one movement between wanting and giving.

Let him finish, and then go and try again yourself

So here is the assignment, and it has two people in it.

Try again with the same person, in the same language, once more this week.

But before that, do the other half. Next time somebody starts a slow sentence at you in their second language, stand there and let them finish it. Do not help. Do not supply the word. Eleven seconds.

You have eleven seconds to give away this week, and standing still while somebody finishes has never once been the same as doing nothing for them. Matthew 7:12 makes what you would want the measure of what you do, and the Holy Spirit is the one in an office with a man keeping his mouth shut on purpose.

And then go and be the other one.

The same person nobody has spoken to since the last switch. Say your slow sentence to them, in their language, and if they finish it for you, there is no longer any mystery about what was in it and what was not.

That knowledge is what Tuesday bought you, and it makes the next switch survivable in a way no amount of encouragement could. Then stop, because one of each is the assignment and nobody owes anybody a policy today.

You have a second attempt that costs less than every one before it, and a switch you understand from the inside has never once landed the way the ones before it landed. The Spirit of God is the one present when a man speaks again to somebody who switched on him, and Matthew 7:12 runs in both directions at once.
