He answers you back in the other one. Every time.
You say something to him in the family language, at the table, in the driveway, on the phone, and he replies in English, warmly, without a pause, and the conversation goes on in English and the two of you have a perfectly good time.
And then you get in the car afterward and there is a thing sitting in your chest that you cannot get a name on.
Let me try to give it one, because I think it is not what it looks like.
It is not that he is being unkind. He is not. He is your favorite cousin, he would do anything for you, and when your father was in the hospital he was there twice a week without being asked.
It is that he is the one who kept it and you are the one who did not, and every time he answers you in English that fact gets stated out loud again without either of you saying a word about it.
I want to say the true thing before anything useful.
That is not really about the language and it is not petty, and I think you have been suspecting both.
You are asking a question underneath every sentence you say to him in it. The question is whether you are still on the inside of this family in the way he is. And his answer is not an answer to that question at all, because he has no idea the question is being asked, and so you keep getting a reply to something else.
So I am not going to tell you to just talk to him about it. That is good advice from somebody who has never had to do it and it skips about four steps.

Come near to me, I pray you
There is a moment in Egypt where a man who has been speaking to his brothers through an interpreter drops the whole arrangement.
Joseph had been running that room in another language for two chapters. He understood every word they said to each other and they had no idea, and there was an interpreter in between the whole time.
And Joseph said unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you. And they came near. And he said, I am Joseph your brother. (Genesis 45:4, King James Version)
Come near to me, I pray you.
Notice what has to happen before the sentence that matters. He asks them to come closer. The room had a distance in it, and the distance was doing real work, and the first move is to close it physically before anything is said.
You have a distance in that driveway that has never been named out loud, and a gap nobody mentions has never once been the same as a gap nobody feels. Genesis 45:4 has the closing of the distance come before the sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one sitting with a man in a car after a family meal.
Now look at what he actually says when they are near.
I am Joseph your brother. Not an explanation of the last two chapters. Not an account of what he has been through, and no complaint about anything, and no question about why they did not recognize him.
He states the relationship. That is the whole content of it.
You have a relationship that was never actually in question, and a thing that goes unsaid has never once stopped being true between two people. The Holy Spirit is the one who knows what is between two cousins, and Genesis 45:4 puts the plain fact of the relation in the middle of the room and nothing else.
And here is the third thing, which is what it cost him to say it.
He wept so loudly the Egyptians outside heard him. That is in the verses either side. The dropping of the arrangement was not smooth or dignified and he did not manage it well, and the text records that as what happened rather than as a failure.
You have never once been required to do this gracefully, and a thing said badly has never once been worth less than a thing said smoothly. Genesis 45 has a man break down in the middle of it, and the Spirit of God is the one with a man who cannot get a name on what is in his chest.
He does not know the question is being asked
Here is the practical half, and it is about what your cousin is actually doing.
He is being efficient, and that is all it is.
When a man he has known since they were four says something in a language he is learning, and the language is already his, the fastest and kindest move available is to answer in whichever one will go quickest. It costs nothing, it keeps the conversation moving, and it is what almost everybody does.
He is not making a statement about who is inside the family. He is answering a question about the dog.
You have been getting an efficient reply where you were listening for a ruling, and speed has never once been the same thing as a judgment. The Holy Spirit is the one who hears the question underneath a sentence about a dog, and Genesis 45:4 puts the relation in the room in five plain words.
You have been receiving an answer to a different question entirely, and a reply about the dog has never once been a ruling about a family. The Spirit of God is the one with a man carrying something unnamed in a car, and Genesis 45:4 has the relationship stated out loud because it had to be said rather than assumed.
Now here is the thing about him specifically, which is worth knowing before you do anything.
He very likely feels something about this too, from the other side. The cousin who kept it often carries an awkwardness nobody talks about: he had no more choice about keeping it than you had about losing it, and being the one who has it can feel like holding something over somebody he loves.
His English may be a kindness aimed at exactly that.
You are not the only one in that driveway managing something, and two people protecting each other has never once been the same as one person being kept out. Genesis 45:4 has a man close a distance that both sides had been living with, and the Holy Spirit is the one who sees what a cousin has been carrying quietly.
And here is what the unnamed thing has been doing, said plainly.
It has been growing. Not fast. Every time you say something and get English back, a small deposit is made, and after two years of small deposits there is something sizable in a car after a meal, and none of it has been made of anything either of you did on purpose.
That is worth interrupting now rather than at four years.
You are standing at the cheapest moment this will ever have, and two years of small deposits has never once been harder to interrupt than four. The Spirit of God is the one who moves a man to say one plain sentence to a cousin, and the written word has Joseph close the distance first and speak second.
Say the plain thing, once, and then say it in the language
So here is the assignment, and it has two parts and the first one is short.
Try again with the same person, in the same language, once more this week.
And before you do, say one plain sentence to him in English. Not a conversation and not an explanation of anything. One sentence, along the lines of: I would like it if you would answer me in it, even when it is slow.
That is it. Eleven words. Do not build a case around it and do not explain what has been in your chest, because he will hear the request perfectly well without any of that.
You have one plain sentence to say and no case to make, and a request said straight has never once needed an argument attached to it. Genesis 45:4 states the relationship in five words and explains nothing at all, and the Holy Spirit is the one in a driveway with two cousins.
And here is what will happen, because with a cousin like yours it is fairly predictable.
He will say yes immediately, and then forget, and answer in English twice more before it takes. That is not him refusing. It is a two year habit, habits need reminding, and saying it again in two weeks does not make it a confrontation.
Then say something to him in the language and let him answer however he answers. Then stop, because one sentence and one attempt is the assignment and nobody owes anybody a new arrangement today.
You have permission to ask twice without it becoming a confrontation, and a habit has never once been broken by being mentioned only once. The Spirit of God is the one present when two cousins change how they speak to each other, and Genesis 45:4 has the distance closed on purpose before anything else happens.
So here is what I believe is going out over a man sitting in a car after a family meal.
They were being kind and I am still allowed to try, and one switch back has never once been a verdict on my attempt. And it is not petty and it is not really about the language, and I am not going to tell you to simply go and have a talk with him. Genesis 45:4 has a man close a distance physically and then state a relationship in five words, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a man to say eleven of them this week.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have been receiving an answer to a different question entirely, and a reply about the dog has never once been a ruling about a family. The Spirit of God is the one with a man carrying something unnamed in a car, and the written word puts the plain fact of the relation in the room with no argument around it.
You are not the only one in that driveway managing something, and two people protecting each other has never once been the same as one being kept out. Genesis 45:4 has the closing of the distance come first and the speaking come second, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing there when you ask.
One sentence. One person. This week.
Declare this over yourself
- Thing in my chest in the car, you have been growing on small deposits for two years and nobody made you on purpose. Genesis 45:4 says come near to me, I pray you, so by the Holy Spirit I say eleven plain words to my cousin this week in the name of Jesus.
- Question underneath every sentence I say, you were never heard by the man I was asking. The word closes the distance first and states the relation second, and by the Holy Spirit I am done sending you out disguised as small talk.
- Father, You had a man close a distance on purpose and then say only that he was their brother, and You let him do it badly and loudly. Your word never once asked him to manage it gracefully, so by Your Spirit I say the plain thing, and I try again in the language after.
