She Asked And I Answered And It Kept Going

She asked you something and you answered it, and then it kept going.

That is the part. Not the answering. You have answered questions before and every single time the exchange has closed right there, because your answer was the end of what you had and everybody could feel it, and the other person moved politely on.

On Sunday it did not close. She said something back, and you said something to that, and she said something else, and the whole thing went four more turns before anybody moved.

Four turns. In a church hall, with a plate in your hand.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

It has been three days and you have not told a single person, and I think I know why.

There is no way to say it out loud that would land. I had a conversation. Everybody has conversations. There is no version of that sentence that would make any person in your life understand what happened at that table, and so it has been sitting in you unsaid since Sunday.

So I am not going to tell you to share it with somebody who would be glad. Let me show you a verse about a voice behind you.

Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee

There is a line in Isaiah about guidance, and the direction it comes from is the strange part.

And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. (Isaiah 30:21, King James Version)

A word behind thee.

Now that is an odd place to be given directions from. You would expect a voice ahead, showing the way, pointing at what is coming. Behind means the person is already moving, already walking, already committed to a direction before anything is said.

The word arrives to somebody in motion rather than to somebody deciding.

You have been given something while you were already moving, and a word that arrives mid stride has never once been a word for somebody standing still. Isaiah 30:21 puts the voice behind rather than in front, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing in a church hall with a woman and a plate.

Now notice when it speaks, because the verse is specific about the timing.

When ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. It does not speak continuously. It arrives at the turns, at the points where a decision is actually being made, and it is silent in between.

Four turns. That is what happened in that conversation. Every time she said something you had to turn, and something was there each time.

You have had something arrive at every turn rather than once at the start, and a thing that met you four times has never once been the same as one that met you once. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present at the turns rather than only at the beginning, and Isaiah 30:21 names the right hand and the left specifically.

And here is the third thing, which is the phrase in the middle.

This is the way, walk ye in it. The guidance is not a correction. It does not say you have gone wrong, and it does not redirect anything. It confirms the direction already being taken, which means the word behind is mostly saying yes.

You have been walking in something that keeps getting confirmed, and a voice that says yes has never once been a smaller word than one that redirects. Isaiah 30:21 confirms the way rather than correcting it, and the Spirit of God is the one who was at that table when four turns went by.

Four turns is a different thing from one answer

Here is the practical half, and it is about what actually happened after your answer.

A conversation is not a series of sentences. It is a series of turns, and the turn is the unit, and it is a completely different skill from producing a sentence.

Here is what a turn requires. You have to understand what came back at speed, decide what it means for what you said, produce something that connects to it rather than something you had ready, and do all of that fast enough that nobody has to wait.

You have been practicing sentences for three years. On Sunday you did four turns.

You have done something four times that you had never once done before, and a turn has never once been the same operation as a sentence. The Spirit of God is the one who was at that table on Sunday, and Isaiah 30:21 puts the word at the turns rather than at the start of the road.

Now here is what changed about the other person, and it is the best part and you have not noticed it.

She stopped adjusting. Somewhere in the second or third turn, the woman opposite you stopped doing the thing people do with learners, which is simplify, slow down, and check. She started just talking.

That is the actual event of Sunday. Not that you kept up. That somebody stopped helping you, without deciding to, because there was no longer any need.

You have had somebody stop adjusting for you in the middle of a conversation, and a person who forgets to simplify has never once been making an allowance. Isaiah 30:21 has the voice arrive at every turn without any fuss about it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who knows what changed in a woman opposite you at turn two.

And here is the thing about not being able to tell anybody, said plainly.

The instinct was right. It would not land. I had a four turn conversation is not a sentence that transfers. The people who love you would be pleased in a general way and would not have any idea what they were being told, and that is not a failure in them.

Which is exactly why it has to be written down rather than told.

You have something that cannot be transferred in conversation, and a thing nobody else can hold has never once been a thing that has to be lost. The Spirit of God is the one who knows what four turns cost and what they meant, and the written word puts a voice behind somebody who is already walking.

Write it down and keep the paper

So here is the assignment, and it is aimed at the thing you cannot tell anybody.

Write down the sentence you understood and keep the paper.

Not one sentence. Write down the turns. What she asked, what you said, what she said back, and as much of the rest of it as you can still recover three days on.

On paper, in your own hand, tonight, before any more of it goes.

You have four turns to get onto a page before they fade, and a thing written down has never once needed somebody else to understand it to be kept. Isaiah 30:21 records the word at the turns specifically, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a woman at a table with a pen on a Wednesday.

And here is the reason the paper matters more for you than for most people.

Nobody is going to confirm this for you. That is the particular shape of your situation. There is no person in your life who can be told what happened on Sunday in a way that would land, and so there will be no outside voice agreeing with you about it, ever.

The paper is the only witness this event is going to get. Written in your own hand, three days after, while you can still recover the turns.

Then stop, because one piece of paper is the assignment and nothing else is asked of you today.

You have permission to be your own record when nobody else can be, and a thing witnessed only on paper has never once been a thing that did not happen. The Spirit of God is the one who was at that table and does not need it explained, and Isaiah 30:21 speaks at every turn without an audience anywhere in the verse.
