They Switched BackColossians 3:13

She Switches Because She Is In A Hurry

This message is for the man whose partner switches to English out of plain impatience rather than kindness, which is harder to be gracious about

She switches because it is faster, and both of you know that is why.

This is the thing that makes your situation different from the usual one. The articles about this assume a stranger being kind, or a relative being gentle, and there is a whole vocabulary of graciousness built up around that.

You have a wife who is tired at six o'clock with two things on the stove, and when you start a sentence slowly she finishes it in English because the sentence is in the way of the evening.

It is not cruelty. It is efficiency, and it is aimed at getting the children fed.

Let me say the part that is harder to admit.

Kindness would be easier to receive. If she were doing it to spare you, you could feel looked after and mildly diminished and get on with it. What is actually happening is that your learning is a small friction in a busy hour and she is removing it, the same way she would move a chair that was in the walkway.

I want to say the true thing before anything useful.

That stings in a way the gentle version does not, and you are allowed to say so, and neither of you is the villain here.

She is not doing anything wrong at six o'clock. A person with two things on the stove and a child asking for something is running a system, and the system has no slack in it, and your sentence is asking for slack that genuinely does not exist at that moment.

So I am not going to tell you she should be more patient. She is not being impatient with you. She is being fast at the hour when fast is what the house requires.

She Switches Because She Is In A Hurry

Forbearing one another

There is an instruction in Colossians about ordinary friction between people who live together.

Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. (Colossians 3:13, King James Version)

Forbearing one another.

Now forbearing is the word to stay on, because it is not forgiving and the verse names both separately. Forgiving is for something that was wrong. Forbearing is for something that is simply hard to live beside and is not anybody's fault, and the verse treats that as its own category that needs its own work.

You have been trying to forgive something that was never a wrong, and a thing that needs forbearing has never once been the same as a thing that needs pardoning. Colossians 3:13 names the two separately and does not collapse them, and the Holy Spirit is the one standing in a kitchen at six o'clock with a man whose sentence got finished for him.

Now notice what forbearing actually asks for, because it is not what people assume.

It does not ask you to stop feeling it. There is no instruction anywhere in that verse to conclude that the thing is fine. Forbearing is about continuing to live alongside something at full size, without requiring it to be resolved before the evening can go on.

You are permitted to feel the whole of it and stay in the kitchen, and forbearing has never once required a man to decide the thing did not bother him. The Holy Spirit is the one with a man carrying something at full size through an ordinary evening, and Colossians 3:13 asks for the carrying rather than for the shrinking.

And here is the third thing, which is the clause at the end.

Even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. The measure given is not what the other person deserves and it is not proportional to anything. It is a standard set somewhere else entirely, which means it does not have to be renegotiated with your wife at six o'clock.

You have never once had to settle this with her before you could be gracious about it, and a standard set elsewhere has never once needed her agreement. Colossians 3:13 puts the measure outside the two people in the room, and the Spirit of God is the one with a man standing beside a stove.

Six o'clock is the wrong hour

Here is the practical half, and it is almost embarrassingly simple.

Stop trying at six o'clock.

That is most of the solution and it has nothing to do with anybody's character. The hardest thing in the week has been getting attempted in the worst available hour, and conclusions about a marriage have been drawn from the result.

At six she has no slack. At nine she has some. On a Saturday morning she has quite a lot.

You have been using the one hour of the day with nothing spare in it, and a bad result at the wrong time has never once been a report on the two of you. The Spirit of God is the one with a man who has been reading a busy kitchen as a verdict, and Colossians 3:13 asks for forbearing in the ordinary friction of living together.

Now here is the thing about her that is worth holding, because it will change how the next attempt goes.

She would almost certainly say yes if you asked for a different time.

Not more patience at six, which she cannot give and which would be a bad thing to ask for. Ten minutes on a Saturday, or the first part of a drive, or the time after the children are down. Those are hours where she has something to give and where her giving it costs the household nothing.

You have been asking for a resource at the exact hour it does not exist, and never asking at the hours it does.

You have been requesting something at the one moment it cannot be given, and an hour with room in it has never once been harder to ask for than an hour without. Colossians 3:13 sets the standard somewhere other than what anybody deserves, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a man to ask for a Saturday.

And here is the thing about the sting, said plainly, because it does not disappear just because the timing improves.

Being a friction in your own house is a hard thing to be, even for ten seconds, even when nobody meant it. That is real and it is not vanity and I am not going to talk you out of it.

Forbearing is what you do with it. Not deciding it was nothing. Carrying it, at full weight, into a Saturday morning where the same woman has time for you.

You are allowed to carry the sting and ask for the Saturday in the same week, and an unresolved feeling has never once had to be settled before the next attempt. The Spirit of God is the one who is with a man who feels like a chair in a walkway, and the written word asks for the forbearing rather than for the feeling to stop.

Ask for a different hour

So here is the assignment, and it moves the clock rather than the person.

Try again with the same person, in the same language, once more this week.

And not at six. Ask her for ten minutes on Saturday morning, or the first ten minutes of a drive, and say plainly that you would like to try it then.

Say it at a calm hour, not at six, and do not attach anything to it about how it has been feeling.

You have one small request to make at a calm hour, and ten minutes on a Saturday has never once been an unreasonable thing to ask a wife for. Colossians 3:13 asks for forbearing in ordinary domestic friction, and the Holy Spirit is the one with a man asking for a Saturday morning instead of a Tuesday evening.

And here is what to do at six o'clock from now on, because the evenings will keep happening.

Say one word. Not a sentence. Hand her something and say the name of it in the language, and let her answer in English, and carry on.

That costs the kitchen nothing. It asks for no slack at all. And it keeps the language in the house at the hour when the house cannot afford a conversation, which is most of what you actually need it to do. Then stop, because one word and one Saturday is the assignment and nobody owes anybody a new arrangement today.

You have a version of this that costs the evening nothing, and one word handed across a stove has never once been the same as asking for a conversation. The Spirit of God is the one in that kitchen at six with a man saying the name of a thing, and Colossians 3:13 sets the measure outside the two people standing there.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over a man whose sentence got finished for him at six o'clock again.

They were being kind and I am still allowed to try, and one switch back has never once been a verdict on my attempt. And in your case it was not kindness, it was speed, and I am not going to tell you she should be more patient at the hour when the house needs her fast. Colossians 3:13 names forbearing as its own separate work and never once asks anybody to conclude the thing was fine, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who gets a man to ask for a Saturday this week.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You have been trying to forgive something that was never a wrong, and a thing that needs forbearing has never once been the same as a thing that needs pardoning. The Spirit of God is the one with a man carrying something at full size through an ordinary evening, and the written word asks for the carrying rather than for the shrinking.

You have been using the one hour with nothing spare in it, and a bad result at the wrong time has never once been a report on a marriage. Colossians 3:13 sets the measure somewhere outside the two people in the kitchen, and the Holy Spirit is the one with you on Saturday morning.

One attempt. One person. A different hour.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Six o'clock in that kitchen, you are the one hour with nothing spare and my partner switches out of plain impatience there. Colossians 3:13 says forbearing one another, so by the Holy Spirit I ask for a Saturday this week in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling like a chair in the walkway, you are real and you are not vanity and you were never a thing she did to me. The word names forbearing as its own work and never asks me to decide it was nothing, and by the Holy Spirit I carry you into Saturday instead.
  3. Father, You put forbearing and forgiving side by side and You never collapsed the two of them together. Your word sets the measure outside the two people in the room, so by Your Spirit I stop asking at six, and I ask her for ten minutes on Saturday.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
