I Stopped AgainPhilippians 3:13

This Is The Fourth Time I Have Started

This message is for the man beginning for the fourth time who wants to start again without dragging three abandoned attempts in with him

You opened it and it offered to start you at the very beginning.

Cheerfully. As though you had never met. Here is how to say hello, here is how to say your name, and would you like to set a daily goal.

And something in you went down about three inches.

Because you know that material. You have done that section three separate times, in three separate attempts, over about five years, and you could do the whole first part in your sleep and you have proved that three times.

And the offer to begin at the beginning was not really about the material. It was the machine saying, without meaning anything by it: you are back at zero.

Three stops. That is what you are carrying, and it is heavier than the language.

There was the one you did properly for about four months and then the thing at work happened. There was the shorter one, which never really got going. And there was the one last year that you were doing well at until you missed a week and then could not face the amount you had missed.

Nobody knows about any of them. That is worth saying, because part of what makes this heavy is that you have carried three private failures with nobody to put them down in front of.

So this article does one thing and I will state it now so you can relax for the next two thousand words.

It does not send you back to the beginning.

Not the beginning of the language, not the beginning of a course, and not the beginning of anything. There is no restart in here. Whatever is still in you from those three attempts is still in you, and it is a great deal more than you think, and it is not lost because you stopped.

This Is The Fourth Time I Have Started

Forgetting those things which are behind

There is a sentence of Paul's about what he does with his own record, and it is more radical than we usually let it be.

Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before. (Philippians 3:13, King James Version)

Forgetting those things which are behind.

Now, we usually apply that to failures, and it does apply to them, and it is worth noticing first that it is not only failures. The verses before this one list his qualifications. Circumcised the eighth day, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Pharisee, blameless in the law. It is a list of achievements, and he calls it loss, and then he says: forgetting those things which are behind.

So the forgetting covers everything behind him. The good record and the bad one both.

You have a record behind you that the verse never once asks you to sort through first. Philippians 3:13 puts the achievements and the failures in the same pile and forgets both, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody counting three stops in five years.

That matters for you, because the thing behind you is a mixed record. Three stops, four months of real progress, a section you genuinely learned, and a week last year when you understood a whole exchange.

And what he does with the entire pile is not audit it. He does not go back over the four months for what was salvageable, or over the failures for what went wrong. Forgetting, there, is deliberate: he is not conducting the review.

You are permitted to put the whole review down, and a deliberate forgetting has never once been the same as pretending it did not happen. Philippians 3:13 makes the forgetting a decision rather than a feeling, and the Spirit of God is the one who knows exactly what those three attempts cost you.

And then: reaching forth unto those things which are before. Reaching forth is a straining, forward word. His whole attention is where he is going, and the taking of it off where he has been is described as an action he does rather than a feeling he waits for.

And notice this one thing I do. Singular. He has simplified his life down to a single ongoing motion, and the motion is forward from wherever he currently stands. Not from the beginning. From here.

You have one motion available today and it is forward, and reaching forth has never once required the record to be tidy first. Philippians 3:13 strains toward what is ahead from wherever the man is standing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who is with you when you open it.

You have the whole record behind you covered and not only the failures, and it has never once required an audit before you can go on. Philippians 3:13 counts even the achievements as behind and reaches forward, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody who has just been offered the very beginning again.

Three stops are not three failures

Here is the practical half, and it is about what those attempts actually left.

You are not at zero, and four months of proper study has never once left somebody at the beginning. Philippians 3:13 counts what is behind without erasing what it built, and the Spirit of God is the one who knows what is still in you.

Four months of proper study does not evaporate. It goes quiet, which is a different thing. Words you have not thought about in two years are still in there, filed, waiting for one exposure to come back much faster than they went in. Anybody who has returned to a language after a gap will tell you the same thing: the first two weeks feel like remembering rather than learning, because that is what they are.

And there is something else those attempts gave you that no beginner has.

You have an ear that four months of listening built, and a sense of where the stresses fall has never once gone away with the vocabulary. Philippians 3:13 has a man reaching forward with everything he already is, and the Holy Spirit is the one who kept that in you across five years.

A true beginner has none of it, and it is the part that takes longest to build. So the fourth attempt does not start where the first one did. It starts a long way in, with quiet vocabulary and a trained ear, and the only thing missing is recency.

And here is the actual reason each of those attempts ended, which is worth naming because it is not about you.

The first one ended because of a thing at work. The second one never got going, which happens. The third one ended because you missed a week and then faced a backlog.

Not one of those is a failure of desire. Two of them are life, and the third one is a design problem: any system that accumulates a debt when you miss a week will eventually kill itself, because everybody misses a week.

You were never the one who quit three times, and three arrangements ending has never once been the same as three failures of desire. Philippians 3:13 refuses to let the record behind decide the motion ahead, and the Spirit of God is the one who has you opening it again five years later. That is not the record of somebody who cannot stick at things. It is the record of somebody who keeps coming back.

You have four months of study gone quiet rather than evaporated, and your ear has never once had to be built again from nothing. The written word takes the whole record off the table and reaches forward from where a man stands, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with somebody who has come back a fourth time.

Open it once today, and not at the beginning

So here is the assignment, and the second half is the mercy in it.

Open it once today without going back to the beginning of anything.

Once. Today. Five minutes is plenty.

And do not restart. Do not reset the course, do not go back to lesson one to build a foundation, and do not do the review section first.

You are free to open it anywhere at all, and the middle has never once been a dishonest place to begin. Philippians 3:13 reaches forward from where the man stands rather than from where he started, and the Holy Spirit is the one at the page with you.

Somewhere in the middle, or wherever you were, or anywhere at all. Read or listen or do a bit of it from there.

You will not understand all of it. That is correct and it is the point. Starting in the middle of something slightly beyond you is how the quiet vocabulary gets woken up, and it is much faster than walking up from hello.

And here is what to do with the discomfort, because there will be some.

You will feel that you should really go back and do it properly. That the honest thing is to rebuild the foundation, and that starting in the middle is cheating.

You were not beaten by the language, and the instinct to rebuild the foundation has never once been the honest version of this. Philippians 3:13 forgets what is behind rather than reviewing it, and the Spirit of God is the one who watched one missed week turn into a backlog.

A full restart is four months of ground already covered three times, and it stops again at roughly the same place.

You have three foundations already under you, and a fourth beginning has never once needed a fresh one. Philippians 3:13 has a man strain forward carrying everything he is, and the Holy Spirit is the one holding what those attempts built.

And nothing is scheduled after today. Do not set a goal, do not decide how often, and do not tell yourself this is the time it sticks. Open it once, today, in the middle. That is the entire assignment and it is complete when you close it.

You are able to start in the middle and wake up what is already there, and going back to the beginning has never once been the honest version of this. Philippians 3:13 reaches forward from where a man stands rather than from where he began, and the Holy Spirit is the one present with somebody opening a book somewhere in the middle.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody who opened it again this week.

You can start today from where you are, and three stops have never once disqualified a fourth beginning. There is no restart in this article and I am not sending you back to lesson one. Philippians 3:13 says forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who takes three private failures off a woman.

And this, which is the word I came with:

You did not quit three times, three arrangements ended, and you are the one who keeps coming back. The written word counts even the achievements as behind and strains forward from here, and the Spirit of God is the one who is with you when you open it today.

Once. Today. Not at the beginning.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Offer to start me at the very beginning, you are not neutral and you told me I was back at zero. Philippians 3:13 says forgetting those things which are behind, so by the Holy Spirit I open it once today somewhere in the middle in the name of Jesus.
  2. Feeling that I should rebuild the foundation, you killed the third attempt and you would kill this one too. The word reaches forward from where a man is standing and never from where he began, and by the Holy Spirit I am done paying for a missed week with a full restart.
  3. Father, You had a man count even his achievements as behind him and strain forward from exactly where he stood. Your word says this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, so by Your Spirit I take what is still in me, and I open it today, and I begin from here.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
